Like what? They hate on female characters in the fandom for being selfish but if sentencing millions of people to their death because you can’t handle being a vampire isn’t selfish then I don’t know what is.

Rewatch Thoughts: Katherine’s Hold Over Her Puppets?

So I just started rewatching The Vampire Diaries, and now I’m wondering: in Season 1, Damon was basically compelling Caroline to come save him like a puppet when Stevan locked him away. Do you think Katherine did the same thing with Damon, Stefan, and the others calling them so they’d try to save her or was it more like everyone she turned ended up trauma-bonded to her?

The black person dies first trope: I counted how many

So we all know how the majority of black characters on the show are killed off, TVD’s own version of the horror movie trope if you will. There was some discussion on this sub a couple months ago about this and I actually wanted to see how many black characters or side characters on the show survived or died, so on my last watch I made a list.

Of that list, 9 black characters survived and the rest of the 29 were killed, which means 76% of black characters on the show were killed off. The nine who survived are:

1. Tiki*

2. Her grandpa*

3. Lucy Bennet, Bonnie’s cousin

4. The nurse at the hospital where Caroline stays after the car accident*

5. Abby Bennett

6. Jamie

7. The girl who Caroline compels to go get ice but crosses the anti-magic border*

8. Beatrice

9. Dorian*

The asterisks are dark-skinned black people and that count is a lot higher in the people who died category. The colorism was very obvious too.

I kept count of this out of curiosity and posted it since it’s very interesting and thought some in this sub might think the same. Now, I didn’t count every single black actor who crossed the screen. If they were just there for a very short moment and/or didn’t contribute much to the scene at all I left them out. Like the garbage man that Rose kills when she’s delirious from the wold bite or the coat check woman Enzo seduces to get information about where Bonnie and Damon went after the other side went away. It made keeping count a lot easier and felt more accurate. I have a list of the other 29 who were killed which is obviously much longer so decided not to include it. I did include Bonnie on that list since she was killed so many times.


I didn’t think to do the same thing with Asian characters for a while since there were hardly any, but eventually at some point I started taking stock as they showed up and if I got it right, 4 out of the 4 Asian characters were killed on the show too. It’s possible I missed some though:

Oscar


This isn’t some big post to complain. We see who the show kills off more than others and obviously it says a _lot_, but I did want to post the results I found for the record at least. I’m going to go ahead and say right now if “whining about racism” is not your thing this post is not for you people. Anyone else is welcome to comment or discuss
