World Pulses Day
👉Recognising the success of the 'International Year of Pulses' implemented by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations in 2016 and the role of pulses in achieving the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) designated February 10 as 'World Pulses Day'.
👉This day presents a unique opportunity to raise public awareness about pulses and play a fundamental role in transforming more efficient, inclusive, resilient and sustainable agrifood systems for better production, better nutrition, better environment and better lives.
👉With the help of governments, the private sector, members and partner organizations, the public and youth, FAO works to facilitate the achievement of the agenda of this International Day and to support the production and consumption of pulses as part of sustainable food systems and healthy diets.
👉Pulses, also known as legumes, are the edible seeds of leguminous plants grown for food. Dried beans, lentils, and peas are the most commonly known and consumed types of pulses.
👉Pulses can reduce cholesterol and help control blood sugar. Due to these properties they are recommended by health organizations for the management of non-communicable diseases such as diabetes and heart conditions. Pulses have also proven helpful in fighting obesity.
👉Pulses are an important crop for farmers because they can sell and eat them, which helps farmers maintain household food security and create economic stability.
👉The nitrogen-fixing property of pulses improves soil fertility. This increases the productivity of the farm. By using pulses for intercropping, keeping harmful pests and diseases away, farmers can also boost farm biodiversity and soil biodiversity.
👉In addition, pulses can contribute to climate change mitigation by reducing dependence on synthetic fertilizers used to artificially add nitrogen to the soil.

National Deworming Day
👉National Deworming Day is held annually on 10th February.
👉Conducting biennial phase of deworming is recommended in States where STH infection is more than 20% and annual phase of deworming is recommended in States where STH infection is less than 20%.
👉Only two states – Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh – have less than 20 per cent STH infection, hence an annual phase of deworming has been recommended in these states.
👉Biennial phase of deworming has been conducted in all other States/UTs.
👉The first phase of NDD was conducted in February, 2015 and 8.9 crore children were dewormed in eleven States/UTs achieving eighty-five percent coverage.
👉Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, Government of India, is the nodal agency to provide guidelines to all States/UTs at all levels regarding implementation of National Deworming Day (NDD).
👉This program is being implemented through the combined efforts of the Ministry of Women and Child Development, Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation, Department of School Education and Literacy under the Ministry of Human Resource and Development.
👉This program is one of the largest public health programs reaching a large number of children over a short period of time.
👉The objective of National Deworming Day is to enhance the overall health, nutritional status, access to education and quality of life of children of pre-school and school-age age between one to nineteen years through schools and Anganwadi centres. Children (enrolled and non-enrolled) have to be given deworming medicine.
👉Helminths (worms) that spread through soil contaminated with feces are called soil-transmitted helminths (intestinal parasitic worms).
👉Roundworms (Ascariasis lumbricoides), whip worms (Trachuris trachurea), hookworms (Necatar americanus and Enclostomes duodenale) are worms that infect humans.
