20 Years of RTI Act: Achievements, Challenges, and the Path Forward
As the Right to Information Act marks two decades, it stands as a pillar of India’s democratic transparency.
Over the years, RTI has empowered citizens to demand accountability, exposed corruption, and strengthened participatory governance. Yet, challenges persist — mounting pendency in Information Commissions, delayed responses, and concerns over autonomy after the 2019 Amendment.
The 2023 DPDP Act further highlights the delicate balance between transparency and privacy. Going forward, timely appointments, digital integration, proactive disclosures, and protection for RTI users are essential to revitalize this citizen-empowerment tool.
RTI’s next phase must ensure “disclosure by default” and uphold its core ethos — an informed, participative democracy.
