A few people examined the behavior of reactions on this post: https://www.tg-me.com/designers/242. And there’s some very strange behavior, which was confirmed during a observation by a certain group of users.
Let’s start with the timeline of what magical things happened with this post:
1. People started placing mass dislikes on the post.
2. Then, after about 2 hours, these dislikes suddenly disappeared: 2,400 dislikes turned into 100 dislikes, and the balance shifted in favor of likes.
Interestingly, on the post below, a similar behavior occurred: 1,762 dislikes turned into 130 dislikes (see https://www.tg-me.com/durovleaks/1072). It seems this post was forgotten about and was left untouched, so dislikes still dominate there.
3. After that, users discovered that Telegram’s server started “adjusting” likes by converting those who clicked dislike.
During the observation, users also found that this oddity was present only on this particular post. On Durov’s post (https://www.tg-me.com/durov/414) and on the post immediately preceding the odd one in the Designers channel (https://www.tg-me.com/designers/241), such behavior wasn’t observed.
Thus, at the server level, there is an artificial boost favoring likes. The formula seems to work as follows:
• 1 like equals an extra 3 likes
• 1 dislike equals an extra 2 likes
• Conversely, –1 like subtracts 3 likes
• –1 dislike subtracts 2 likes
This behavior was reproduced on all official clients that offer the full reaction count without abbreviation. Besides the official clients, the observation was also confirmed using the MTProto API (https://www.tg-me.com/durovleaks/1076). The video clearly shows a pattern that was confirmed on the official clients, which indicates that cheating is being used at the server side.
Telegram has mentioned WhatsApp more than 500 times, choosing a conservative competitor—a messenger for grandmas, essentially. While WhatsApp does not react to these provocations, Telegram benefits from them. Recall that this all started with a trolling post (https://www.tg-me.com/durov_russia/55). The author of that post previously admitted that it was written purely for a laugh and did not expect Durov to fall for such an easy bait. And even that troll post was just a copy of an article from iguides.ru, whose editor stated that the article expressed his personal opinion and wasn’t commissioned advertising for WhatsApp.
So why does Durov not choose a stronger competitor? And what’s the point of adjusting the reactions—what does it gain?
Let’s not forget that Durov also deleted his most-disliked post (over 30,000 dislikes): https://www.tg-me.com/durov/194. Apparently, he is no longer willing to tolerate negative reactions.
We propose banning negative reactions, just like on YouTube!
