19 Similarly also concerning the station days: a number of
people think they ought not to participate in the prayers of the
sacrifices, because the station, they allege, has to be broken by
the reception of the Lord's body.
Does then the Eucharist cancel a devout service to God? or does it rather bind us closer to God? Will not your station be more ceremonious if you have also stood at God's altar?
By your accepting the Lord's body and reserving it both things are safe, your partaking of the sacrifice and your performance of your duty. If 'station' has received its name from military precedent (for we are also God's militia), evidently neither joy nor sorrow occurring to a camp releases the soldiers from guard-duty: for joy will administer discipline with a better will, sorrow with greater concern.- Tertullian, De Orationae

It was determined therefore to fashion a tabernacle, a work of the highest sanctity, the construction of which was set forth to Moses on the mount by divine pronouncements. He saw with the soul's eye the immaterial forms (idea) of the material objects about to be made, and these forms were to be reproduced in copies perceived by the senses.- Philo on Moses' ascent of Mt Sinai

7.2. It is necessary that those who love learning to not read these things cursorily, but to prepare the mind for the things that lie before us. For the divine writings do not idly preach to us, but their admonition is meant for us and also the blessing of these prophets and the demonstration of all the things which are spoken by them are for us as well. - St Hippolytus Commentary on Daniel I

For that which issued from the elders concerning what befell Susannah, these things are now also likewise accomplished by the chiefs of the people in Babylon now.
15.5. For Susannah foreshadows the church, Jehoiakim her husband foreshadows Christ. The garden is the calling of the saints just like how fruit bearing trees produce fruit in the church. Babylon is the world.
15.6. But the two elders represent the example of two peoples who scheme against the church, one who is of the circumcision and one who is of the gentiles. For it is said, “They were appointed as chiefs of the people and judges,” It indicates that in this age they have authority and rule, unrighteously judging the righteous.- St Hippolytus

The eye that mocks at his father, and dishonours the old age of his mother. (Proverbs 30:17)
That is to say, one that blasphemes God and despises the mother of Christ, the wisdom of God — his eyes may ravens from the caves tear out, i.e., him may unclean and wicked spirits deprive of the clear eye of gladness; and may the young eagles devour him: and such shall be trodden under the feet of the saints.- St Hippolytus, Fragment I, On Proverbs

And she has furnished her table (Proverbs 9:2)
that denotes the promised knowledge of the Holy Trinity; it also refers to His honoured and undefiled body and blood, which day by day are administered and offered sacrificially at the spiritual divine table, as a memorial of that first and ever-memorable table of the spiritual divine supper.- St Hippolytus, Fragment II, On Proverbs

30.1. Tell me, you three boys, remember me, I entreat you, that I also may obtain the same lot of martyrdom with you, who was the fourth person with you who was walking in the midst of the furnace and who was hymning to God with you as from one mouth?
Describe to us his form and beauty so that we also, seeing him in the flesh, may recognize him. Who was he who in this way orderly described all creation through your mouth, so that you omitted nothing of which is and has been?- St Hippolytus of Rome, Commentary on Daniel II

Here, then, I come to God's Altar with a full Persuasion that these Words, This is my Body, promise me more than a Figure; that this holy Banquet is not a Representation made of outward Shews without Substance ... But how these mysteries become in my behalf the supernatural instruments of such blessings, it is enough for me to admire. One thing I know (as said the blind man after he had received his sight, St. John ix. 15), He put clay upon mine eyes, and I washed and do see ... as He offers Himself to men, the holy Eucharist is, after the Sacrifice for sin, the true festival and Sacrifice of peace-offerings, and the table purposely set up to receive those mercies that are sent down from the altar. Take and eat; this is my body which was broken for you; and this is the blood which was shed for you.- Daniel Brevint, The Christian Sacrament and Sacrifice (1673)

Such a lovely picture this is, where you can see St Stephen being stoned, can see Saul keeping the coats of those doing the stoning. This man is Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus (1Cor1:1), this man is Paul, the servant of Christ Jesus (Rom1:1). Yes, you listened very well to the voice saying "Why are you persecuting me?"(Acts9:4).You were laid low, you were raised up; laid low as a persecutor, raised up as a preacher.
Tell us, let us hear it: Paul, the servant of Christ Jesus by the will of God (2Cor1:1). Certainly not by your will, was it, dear Saul?
We know, we have seen your fruits that came by your will; Stephen was slain by your will. We can see your fruits that came by the will of God: you are read everywhere, chanted everywhere, everywhere you are converting to Christ the hearts that oppose him, everywhere as a good shepherd you are gathering huge flocks.- St Augustine, Sermon 316

With bright metals,
the splendid hall of God shines, in which the precious light of faith flashes even more radiantly.
From the martyr-physicians unshakeable hope of being healed has come to the people, and the place has grown by virtue of [its] sacred honor. Felix has offered to the Lord this gift,
worthy of a bishop,
that he may live in the highest heights of heaven

So what answer then did Jesus give to murmurers like these?
Do not murmur to one another, as if to say ,"I know why you hunger not and have no understanding of this bread nor do you seek it.
"Do not murmur to one another; no one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws him (Jn6:43-44).
What splendid praise of grace. Nobody comes unless drawn. Which one he draws and which one he does not, why he draws this one and does not draw that one, is not for you to judge, if you do not want to err.
Hold on to this once and for all and understand it. Are you not yet being drawn? Pray to be drawn.- St Augustine, Homily 26 on John
