“Know ye not,” he says, “my brethren, that so many of us as were baptized into Christ were baptized into His death?

therefore we are buried with Him by baptism into death.” (Romans 6:3-4)

What does being “baptized into His Death” mean?

That it is with a view to our dying as He did. For Baptism is the Cross. What the Cross then, and Burial, is to Christ, that Baptism hath been to us, even if not in the same respects. For He died Himself and was buried in the Flesh, but we have done both to sin. Wherefore he does not say, planted together in His Death, but in the likeness of His Death. For both the one and the other is a death, but not of the same subject; since the one is of the Flesh, that of Christ; the other of sin, which is our own.-St John Chrysostom, Homily X, Romans

After so many backslidings, with what confidence can I now return? With none. Altogether confused, altogether covered with confusion, I sit, I walk, I lie down. Nor should I dare to do it, nor could I do aught but despair, and act like the desperate unless there were yet a hope left. And what hope? That Thou wilt extend Thy mercy to seventy times seven. That measure of forgiveness Thou has enjoined to us...will not Thou Thyself practice the same? Yea, & much more."- Lancelot Andrewes(Anglican)

Hear me quickly, O Lord; my spirit fails
Do not turn Your face away from me,
lest I be like those who go down into the pit.
Cause me to hear Your mercy in the morning,
for in You I have put my trust. Cause me to know, O Lord, the way in which I should walk,
for I lift up my soul to You. Rescue me, lord, from my enemies;
to You have I fled for refuge. Teach me to do Your will,
for You are my God.
Your good Spirit shall lead me in the land of uprightness.
For Your name’s sake, O Lord, You shall quicken me.
In Your righteousness You shall bring my soul out of trouble, and in Your mercy,
You shall utterly destroy my enemies.
And you shall destroy all those who afflict my soul;
for I am Your servant. Psalm 142

For Moses was named god and king of the whole nation, and entered, we are told, into the darkness where God was, that is into the formless, invisible, incorporeal and archetypal essence of existing things. Thus he perceived what may not be seen by the sight of mortal nature, and, in himself and his life displayed for all to see, he has set before us, like some well wrought picture, a piece of work beautiful and godlike, a model for those who are willing to copy it- Philo, Life of Moses

The Temple building inside the court of the priests, then, represents the life of the perfect and those of sublime sanctity in the holy Church, that is to say, of those who by the excellence of their virtues are wont to approach the Lord and who provide guidance to others in the way of salvation by word and work.- St Bede the Venerable, Liber officialis 3.19.36, ed. These things are done in the celebration of the Mass, the sacrament of Passion Sunday, as in that precept saying, “Whenever you do this, do this in memory of me.” For that reason the priest, in sacrificing bread and wine and water in Christ’s sacrament, [makes] the bread and body of Christ and the wine and water his blood in the sacrament. The sacraments ought to have a certain resemblance to those things of which they are sacraments. Therefore the priest resembles Christ, just as the bread and drink resemble the body of Christ. Thus the sacrifice of the priest at the altar is in a way like the sacrifice of Christ on the cross.-Amalarius, Liber officialis

Once again the season for the holy feast shines upon us, with the contest of endurance getting under way shortly before and commanding us to display holiness of life and every other virtue as a sort of payment of a yearly debt to God, the Lord of all.

But there is no exhortation to obedience that is unsuitable to those well-disposed, who seek to gain profit from the subject. For the fruit of good labors is glorious, while there is nothing more grievous than hesitation and idleness; the refusal to endure whatever is necessary to gain what will be of benefit will carry a heavy penalty, and this not in the sense of what concerns ordinary affairs, but what concerns nothing less than the loss of the soul.- Cyril of Alexandria, Festal Letter IV

These words are worth your attention:

Remember to go to church And pray to the Maker of us all To bless your soul with His mercy And, here in this worldly life, Protect you as the Christian you are.-Gornemant to Perceval

Psalm 50

O Lord, open my lips, and my mouth shall show forth Your praise.

For if You had desired sacrifice, I would give it:

You do not delight in burnt offering.

A sacrifice to God is a broken spirit,

God will not despise a broken and humbled heart.

Do good in Your good pleasure to Sion;

and let the walls of Jerusalem be built.

Then You shall be pleased with a sacrifice of righteousness, with oblation and whole burnt offerings.

Then they shall offer bulls on Your altar.
