🌻🌻 Biography of Āyatullāh Muḥammad Bāqir Taḥrīrī (Part One)

🌺 Year and Place of Birth

He was born in Tehran in the year 1955 to a family of religious scholars. His mother was a respectable lady from a middle class, religious family with a strong love for the Ahlul-Bayt (a). His father was the late Āyatullāh Maḥmūd Taḥrīrī, who was a well-known scholar and mystic.


🌺 Āyatullah Maḥmūd Taḥrīrī (His Father)

From a young age his father busied himself acquiring knowledge of the Qur’ān and the Ahlul-Bayt along with practicing and preaching this knowledge. While still young, he associated with spiritual personalities such as Shaykh Rajab ‘Alī Khayyāṭ and then began his studies in the Islamic seminaries of Tehran. In the seminaries he became acquainted with great scholars such as Āyatullāh Shāh Ābādī and Sayyid Riḍā Darbandī. He then enrolled in the Islamic seminary of Qom and studied under great scholars such as:

🔺 Ayatullāh Muḥammad Riḍā Gulpaygāni
🔺 Imam Rụ̄hullāh Khumaynī
🔺 Ayatullāh Muḥammad Bāqir Sulṭāni
🔺 Ayatullāh Muḥammad Jawād Khandaghabādi
🔺 Sayyid Kāẓim ʻIṣār
🔺 Ayatullāh Ḥusayn Burūjardī

In addition to this Āyatullah Maḥmūd was in touch with, and benefited spiritually from Ayatullah Bahjat as well as some of the students of the well-known mystic Mīrzā Jawād Malikī Tabrīzi such as Sayyid Ḥusayn Qummi and Shaykh ‘Abbās Tehrāni . However his primary teacher in matters of mysticism and spirituality was ‘Allāmah Muḥammad Ḥusayn Tabātabā’ī. At the same time he established a spiritual bond with the great mystic, Shaykh Jawād Anṣāri Hamadānī.

At the age of 30, Āyatullah Maḥmūd led congregational prayers and held many sermons, preaching and enlightening youths. He passed away in the mosque before leading the prayers in the year 1990.

🌴 Early Life in Tehran

Āyatullāh Muḥammad Bāqir Taḥrīrī entered elementary school at the age of six and spent two years in high school while also attending religious gatherings and benefiting from his father’s spiritual presence. It was his father who inspired him to acquire religious knowledge. As a result he entered the Islamic seminary of Mullā Muḥammad Jaʻfar in Tehran in the year 1969, which at the time was under the management of Ayatullah Mujtahidī. Here he studied the majority of the book Sharḥ al-Lumʻah along with other introductory studies under Āyatullāh Mujtahidī and other teachers. Some of his distinguished teachers in Tehran include:

🔺 Shaykh Hạbībī
🔺 Shaykh Qāsimī
🔺 Shaykh Abul Qāsim Falsafī

In addition to benefiting from the spiritual presence of Āyatullāh Mujtahidī, he also benefited from Shaykh Jawad Karbalā’ī and the spiritual gatherings of Sayyid Hāshim Tehrānī.

I sometimes tell university teachers that alongside their physics and chemistry formulae, they must also teach students lessons about God through these very sciences. How well these lessons would be understood by those seeking the truth. Of course, it is well possible that the unconcerned people in class will not accept these.
