After finishing Attack on Titan, I canโ€™t stop thinking โ€” was there any other option besides killing Eren?

Most popular theories after season 2?

So I started watching the show just a couple of weeks ago and I try to binge through about 12-14 episodes every weekend, finishing Season 2 today. Unfortunately, I kind of ruined my viewing experience before I even began it. I have always been a bit of a spoiler fiend in some cases, just watching clips of shows online without really watching the show. Hell, I have probably seen a season or two worth of sopranos content just on Youtube alone. I was the same way with anime back in middle school and high school thinking I would never really watch these shows, but was still a bit interested in the story. Attack on Titan was one of those anime because I thought it was two gory, but I still wanted to see what the story was. Now that I started to actually sit down and watch the show I love it and still get enjoyment from the viewing. It just feels like a re-watch instead of my first time because I unfortunately know all the twists which occur (the foreshadowing in this show was insane). If I could slap myself 6-7 years ago for being too impatient and lazy I would but what can you do.

With that said, I would love to know what popular theories were gaining traction after the conclusion of season two. Like the big questions after season one were numerous: If these particular abnormals are titan shifters, than who are the colossal and armored titan? What is in Eren's basement? Is the Smiling titan significant? What's Annie's backstory? How did Eren get his abilities? Where did the titans come from? People had to come up with answers to these questions and they marinated on it for 3 years before season two, which answered some and then opened others.

What is Bertholt and Reiners Hometown? What are there motivations? What are there backstories? What was that civilization that Ymir was a part of 60 years ago? How are people turned into titans? Who is the beast titan? Why is Crista important? How can Eren control titans? etc.

While I unfortunately know the answer to most of these questions due to my shortsightedness, I want to get into the headspace of a fan back in like 2017 and 2018. What were the popular answers or discourse around these questions? What were the popular fan theories around that time frame if you can remember?

Did Armin know?

As their closest friend, did Armin know that Eren and Mikasa killed those guys back in Mikasa's cabin? I don't recall if it was ever explicitly stated (it's hardly talked about as it is), so if not, do you think he'd know? Do you think they'd somehow hide it?

People who say "Eren did it for his friends/he was right" What do you make of this scene?
