The Aurora Borealis is a breathtaking( захватывающее)  display, painting the northern night sky with shimmering (мерцающими) curtains of emerald, sapphire, and ruby light. It looks like these colours dance. This amazing natural event makes people feel like they are watching a magical dance of cosmic light.

Can this natural phenomenon interfere with aircraft technology ?

Yesterday we were discussing  aquaplaning (or hydroplaning) with one of my students.I would say,it is a pilot’s worst nightmare.
Let's consider it now.

Aquaplaning occurs when the plane's tires start surfing on a layer of water on the runway.

💦So,
When water doesn’t drain properly, a film( пленка) forms between the tires and the runway surface.

The wheels lose contact → braking becomes ineffective → the aircraft can’t decelerate or steer properly.

🔻Typical signs:

💥Unusually long landing roll

💥Aircraft feels like it’s floating or sliding

Following our last post, after the lesson I started reading about methods of preventing aquaplaning on runways — and here’s what I found.👇👇👇
Have you ever noticed those tiny cuts across the runway surface?
They’re not for decoration — they can actually save lives.

💧 Grooves = Drainage.
Runway grooves help water drain away quickly during rain.
This keeps the tires in direct contact with the surface — reducing the risk of aquaplaning and improving braking action.

How it works:

Water flows into the grooves instead of forming a film under the wheels.

Friction stays high, even on wet surfaces.

Pilots can stop safely without losing control.

By the way, did you know?

Grooving depth is usually just about 6 mm, but that’s enough to make a huge difference when braking at 140 knots on a wet runway!

📕Meaning : to impose a fee or price on someone for a service or activity.

E.g.
Airlines often charge passengers to check in more than one bag.

Low-cost carriers usually charge travelers to pre-select their seats.

Dear ATCs, thank you for your tireless work, your сonstant focus.
Wish you clear skies, smooth traffic flows and a safe, rewarding shift every time you sit down at the console.

Happy International ATC Day!

Several people wrote to me with the same question regarding a previous post: "Why do you use 'wish for a swift return' but not "wish you to return"?"

Let's clear the air)

There are some Wish constructions.

1)
'Wish' + noun: This structure expresses a  desire or blessing for another person;it is often used in congratulations.

I wish you a lot of flight hours.

❗️(Not I wish you to have a lot of flight hours.)

2)
Wish for' + noun : This construction is used to express a desire for something that doesn't depend on  the speaker.

I wish for a swift return to ATC work
.

❗️(Not I wish you to return to ATC work.)

3)
wish+infinitive(wish which concerns only the speaker's actions. When you are willing to do something on your own.)

I wish to work for Emirates.

Today I have administered an ICAO exam, and here are the errors the candidate made in their speech.

1.reported about ..to ATC
2.graduated Flight Academy
3.it led to damages of a plane
4.for decrease
5. colleague (pronunciation)

1.The pilot reported about the turbulence to ATC.

🎓
The verb "to report"  takes a direct object  and does not need the preposition 'about'.

The Correct Phrase: The pilot reported the turbulence.  (We use 'about' when 'report' is a noun: a report about the incident.)

2. I graduated Flight Academy.

🎓
When you "finish education" at  high educational institution, you must include the preposition from.

The Correct Phrase: I graduated from the Flight Academy.

3. It led to damages of plane.
🎓
The word "damage" (in the meaning harm or injury) is uncountable and is always singular.

The Correct Phrase: It led to damage to the aircraft.

4. The  spoilers are used for decrease the speed.

🎓
If we use a verb after FOR, we use the construction "for+gerund" ( for+verb-ING)

The correct phrase: Spoilers are used for decreasing lift.

5.collEAgue

Colleague - the first syllable is stressed.

colleague/ˈkɒl.iːɡ/
