In a famous essay from 1918, Oswald Spengler announced “The Downfall of the West.” His thesis was simple, though deeply pessimistic: civilizations, like organisms, have their own life cycle - they are born, mature, and die. A century later, Europe seems determined to grow old with dignity, without resistance, without noise, but also without children.

Today, almost all EU countries have fertility rates far below population renewal. An average of 2.1 kids per woman is needed to maintain population at the same level. In Italy and Spain, the rate falls below 1.3. These are not just demographic data, but civilizational indicator.

If some being - some animal species - refused to reproduce, scientists would see it as a symptom of collective depression. In humans, we call it "civilizational progress". Essentially, it's the same thing: biological rejection of life. The instinct for survival has been replaced by the instinct for self-annihilation.

Once, people gave birth to children because it was natural. Now it's a project. A project that is postponed, revised, often cancelled. People don't make families anymore - they make themselves. They improve themselves, explore themselves, consume themselves. And when the time comes for love, the body is already tired, and the soul has long been corrupted.

Feminism, that great emancipatory movement, has meanwhile become a necrophilic liturgy - it celebrates a body freed from everything: from role, from relationships, from motherhood, from attachment, from pain. A woman no longer belongs to anyone - not even to herself.

Men, on the other hand, have mostly given up. Constantly criticized, exposed to ridicule, infantilized, exposed to a market of desirability in which they are less and less competitive, they retreated into pornography, video games and sexual desperation. Sex has become a market. Love is a fetish. Intimacy - insomnia.
