Bishop Dr. Alois Hudal, born in Austria-Bohemia, had been for several years at the head of the Anima in Rome, an institution founded by Charles V. The religious development within the Third Reich as well as the German-Austrian question aroused in him a keen interest. In 1936, he undertook the bold attempt — inspired by a deep sense of responsibility — to contribute to the spiritual debate, then so necessary, with National Socialism. He wrote a book entitled The Foundations of National Socialism and dedicated the first copy to Hitler.

I had encouraged him in this endeavor and, during frequent discussions, I had informed Hitler of this study which was soon to be published, and which addressed the subject on a high spiritual level. That a prelate of such eminent rank, a Volksdeutscher from the former Danubian monarchy, concerned himself — as stated in the book’s preface — with "the ardent heart" of the German question, could not fail to make a strong impression on Hitler. My remarks always aroused keen interest in him. While Bishop Hudal recognized the efforts of National Socialism to establish with all its might a new social order and a balance between capital and labor, while waging a fierce struggle against the nihilistic tendencies of Bolshevism, he nevertheless affirmed that this path was only viable on the foundation of Christian principles.

Therefore, he demanded that everything which, in theory as well as in practice, contradicted the inalienable natural law as defined in Christian doctrine, must be eliminated from the National Socialist program.

When I personally handed Hitler the first copy dedicated to him, he accepted it with gratitude and promised to read it with interest. At that time, the import of books was already controlled by a high Party service, and since Hudal’s work — printed in Austria — required an import permit, I asked Hitler to instruct this service to allow its distribution so that a spiritual debate could take place within wide circles of the Party. He promised to do everything. But immediately the opposition work began within the movement. It was especially Goebbels who understood the danger such a debate could represent and who put all his diabolical dialectics into play to influence Hitler. He, as well as Bormann, pressed the latter not to allow the distribution of the book under any circumstances, as it could exert a dangerous influence on the Party. Hitler hesitated. Our discussion lasted for hours. Each time I seemed to have convinced him, the door opened, and Bormann intervened. In the end, I only managed to obtain permission to import two thousand copies, on the condition that they be distributed to the Party’s leading circles. Thus, the attempt at a serious discussion was sabotaged.

Bishop Hudal was dismayed and deeply disappointed. In certain circles, he was later severely criticized for having dared this attempt at rapprochement, undertaken with the ardent heart of a priest and patriot. For my part, I hold deep gratitude for the help he gave me in the fight for Christian principles. Even if the hopes remained in vain, it is the duty of historical honesty to give credit to all those whose will was pure and intentions irreproachable. Pope Pius XI himself expressed, in his encyclical Mit brennender Sorge (1937), that one must never abandon hope for improvement. For me, the failure of Hudal’s attempt was a disappointment all the more painful because I knew it would only strengthen the growing opposition of the Austrian clergy to any rapprochement with Germany.
