Why do we care for subhumans?

At a recent meeting of the Tallinn branch of the Estonian Eugenics and Genealogy Society, Dr. J. Vilms said, according to the press report:

“Public welfare in Estonia is organized so that every idiot is reared at the expense of the state. He always has lodging and a full stomach, while gifted people often have neither. Official statistics already show 10,000 mental patients in Estonia — one inferior person for every hundred inhabitants. Counting prisoners as well, the maintenance of dependents costs one billion cents per year. Yet these dependents also vote in the parliamentary elections.”

In one sense Dr. Vilms is quite right: our present welfare system is aimed chiefly at protecting the inferior elements and securing their existence. The Estonia of the future, however, needs not idiots and defectives, but healthy, strong-willed, and capable full-blooded Estonians. Therefore our welfare system requires reorganization so that henceforth the development and propagation of the gifted Estonians will be ensured. The sooner steps are taken in that direction, the better.

Internationalism on the rise

According to press reports, a new male-student organization is now being founded in Tartu under the motto “Nations closer to one another!” Among the founders are said to be Estonians, Russians, Germans, and Jews, and one of the most prominent professors of medicine is said to have agreed to lend his support.

This raises a serious question for nationally minded Estonians: what necessity drives certain gentlemen in Tartu, bearing Estonian names, to establish a fraternity with Russians, Germans, and Jews — when Estonians already have too strong a tendency toward internationalism in their blood? And who is the renowned professor who has given this undertaking his blessing? These persons must be identified, and true Estonians will not delay in drawing the necessary conclusions regarding them.

Meanwhile in Petseri an incubator of internationalism is being built by another route: through prolonged organizing work the socialists have succeeded in “taking over” the Estonian Educational Society at its last general meeting. In place of its former national aim, internationalism is now reportedly to become its watchword.

All full-blooded Estonians of Petseri should immediately draw the necessary conclusions from this and, by united strength, take steps to eliminate swiftly this sprouting seed of internationalism.
