SEPTEMBER 12: THE MYRRH OF THE SEA
The Most Holy Name of Mary
---
The original version of Mary’s name in Aramaic is β€œMaryam” (ΧžΧ¨Χ™Χ) taken from the word β€œmerur” which means β€œbitterness.” This is the reason why she was given titles like β€œThe Myrrh of the Sea” and β€œBitter Sea” which reflect the bitterness she experienced in seeing her Son suffer and die. The reforms of Vatican II caused the removal of its feast in the General Roman Calendar. But, St. John Paul II restored its celebration in 2002.

THE TREE OF OUR SALVATION
Exaltation of the Holy Cross of Christ
---
Salvation through Christ’s death on the wood of the Cross is so poetic for it was by the wood of the tree that sin entered humanity. The preface for the Mass of the day says: β€œFor you placed the salvation of the human race on the wood of the Cross, so that, where death arose, life might again spring forth and the evil one, who conquered on a tree, might likewise on a tree be conquered, through Christ our Lord.”
