When Joan K., for example, is questioned about Gisèle Pelicot: «Did you not ask yourself whether she agreed? [...] Isn't consent fundamental? Was Mrs Pelicot capable of consenting or refusing?», he replies, probably honestly: «No, but at that time I did not know what consent was». And this is what transpires in almost every interrogation: some think the husban can consent for his wife, some other think that a sleeping person can be considered consenting, and the majority of them, most of all, seem to only have discovered the vocabulary of consent with their arrest and trial. It wasn't being said that they didn't know what they were doing. Everybody knew – and the videos shiw it – that she had not to wake up. We cannot be certain that they talked about it in these terms and consciously, but the immense caution used in their actions not to wake her up, the preoccupation at her every movement, prove they were well aware of doing something that she, if she had regained consciousness, would not have agreed on.
