COVID once again seems to be everywhere: numbers are up, variants are circulating, boosters are being brought forward and the government is planning to restart surveillance.
Infections are up
More than 1 million people in the UK currently have symptomatic COVID, according to estimates from the ZOE Health Study.
The ongoing study, run by King's College London, uses data from app users to predict infection rates across the country.

The spread of COVID led to London’s Gatwick airport limiting the number of daily flights last week. Widespread absences due to sickness among staff responsible for air traffic control meant that the airport, Britain’s second largest, was forced to limit the number of flights taking off or landing to just 800 each day, from Monday to Sunday.
This resulted in 164 flights being cancelled, with an estimated 25,000 passengers affected. According to National Air Traffic Services (NATS), as many as 30 percent of air traffic control staff were reported to be ill after an outbreak of COVID-19.
