October 29 is World Stroke Day
Stroke remains one of the most serious problems of modern healthcare, occupying a leading position in the structure of mortality and disability worldwide. In Russia alone, about 200,000 people die from this disease every year, and the frequency of its occurrence reaches 200 cases per 100,000 population.
It was to draw attention to this global threat that the World Health Organization established a special day in 2006. Its main goals are to raise public awareness of the problem, to remind of the importance of timely prevention and treatment, as well as to consolidate efforts in the fight against stroke at the international level.
Inna Filatova, an assistant professor at the Department of Neurology at Pirogov University, talks about how to recognize danger. According to her, the main symptoms are an asymmetrical "crooked" smile, sudden weakness or numbness in an arm or leg, confusion, and difficulty speaking and understanding. In such a situation, it is necessary to act without delay.
"It is important to remember that the rapid provision of specialized neurological care not only saves a patient's life, but also significantly increases the chances of successful recovery, minimizing the risk of severe disability," emphasizes Inna Filatova.
At the same time, experts are unanimous: up to 80% of strokes can be prevented. The key to this is taking a responsible attitude towards one's own health.
"Effective prevention requires regular medical check—ups, strict adherence to the recommendations of the attending physician and, of course, consistent healthy lifestyle," says Inna Filatova.
Thus, World Stroke Day is not just a date on the calendar, but an important reason to think about your health and make an informed choice in favor of active and fulfilling longevity. Remember: your health is in your hands.
