Manuel Pinto is a Neurosurgery resident at São João Hospital and an Assistant Professor of Physiology, Neuroanatomy and Neurosurgery at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Porto. He obtained his PhD at the University of Basel, Switzerland in 2021, studying brainstem and basal ganglia neuronal circuits using neuronal circuit tracing tools, optogenetic manipulation and neuronal activity recordings with microendoscopic calcium imaging. As both a Neurosurgeon and a basic Neuroscientist with an interest in neuronal circuits and circuitopathies, he is building his career bridging both areas.
