“As a single footstep will not make a path on the earth, so a single thought will not make a pathway in the mind. To make a deep physical path, we walk again and again. To make a deep mental path, we must think over and over the kind of thoughts we wish to dominate our lives.”

— Henry David Thoreau

“Suffering and pain are always mandatory for broad minds and deep hearts - truly great people, it seems to me, should feel great sadness on this earth.” — Fyodor Dostoevsky

"Doing your own thing" isn't for everyone.
In the modern social media age, there's this weird stigma associated with being an employee. Everyone says you have to "bet on yourself" and "build your own thing" or you will never get rich.

That's bad advice (and completely false).

Starting your own business isn't for everyone, and there's nothing wrong with working your way up at someone else's company. In fact, for most people, it's probably the best path to building Financial Wealth.

Also, the notion that "doing your own thing" means working 4 hours per week from a beach in Bali is also a lie. There may be some people who are able to pull this off, but for most of us, "doing your own thing" means working just as much (if not more). There is no easy mode when it comes to entrepreneurship.

Don't get shamed into a path that isn't yours.

Anxiety comes from many options but no priorities.

Sadness comes from a perceived lack of options.

To solve the first, prioritize. Cut the rest.

To solve the second, look. There’s always an option. You just don’t see it yet. Which means finding it becomes your default action.

"If you do not actively choose a better way, then society, culture, and the general inertia of life will push you into a worse way.

The default is distraction, not improvement."

Elevated standards create elevated results.

You notice this whenever you work with an outlier. The bar they set for themselves and others is beyond what most people imagine.

Standards apply not just to the quality of work you produce but the opportunities you work on. If you accept substandard work from yourself, you’ll only get average work from others. If you say yes to average projects, you’ll have no time for exceptional ones.

Raise the bar to raise the results.

Iron rusts from disuse; water loses its purity from stagnation… even so does inaction sap the vigor of the mind.

Courage is found in the willingness to live by a virtue under extreme conditions.

The courage to show up for a partner or friend when the other person is lost. The courage to be do something hard when everything pulls at you to choose the easier path. The courage to sit in the present when your mind pulls you into the past.

Where do you exhibit courage in your life? Worth thinking about this weekend...

You get no competitive edge from consuming the same stuff everyone else is consuming. It’s rare, now, to focus. And it gives such better rewards.

“Writing is the process by which you realize that you do not understand what you are talking about. Importantly, writing is also the process by which you figure it out.”

once you stop fantasizing about that ideal version of yourself and start working towards becoming that person by setting your alarm clock earlier and actually going to the gym and actually volunteering at places and actually eating healthier and not procrastinating and working just a little bit harder you'll realize that it was so easy all along. becoming your ideal self will only ever exist in your mind until you make the decision to work towards becoming that person.

get up.
get going.
it's now or never!
there is no light at the end of the tunnel.
get the flashlight and pave your own path because no one else is going to do it for you!
