Towards the end of the procession in today’s liturgy, the doors of the Church are discovered to be locked, halting the solemn cortège. The subdeacon strikes the door with the processional Cross. The doors are opened. The laity enters the Church and the procession continues. This simple ceremony is incredibly symbolic, as it depicts our Salvation. While the gates of Heaven are closed due to the sin of our first parents, they are unlocked by the Wood of the Cross.
