" Tommy on the bridge" Tommy was a blind beggar who stood on the Swing Bridge. His real name was Thomas Ferens and he was thought to have been born in the Close in 1842. He died on New Year's Day 1907 after collapsing in snow on the Gateshead end of the bridge.
