1929 The construction of a traffic island in Theatre Square, replacing the statue of Samuel Morley, which once stood on this spot. Morley was MP for Nottingham and Bristol who died in 1886. Showing the Theatre Royal to the left, and the Peach Tree and Turf Tavern in the centre. The spire of Holy Trinity Church in Trinity Square can be seen in the background. Note the Police Officer stood in his box.

Then the steam engines came. Taken in 1895 - this farm worker prepares to thresh grain by hand using a traditional flail, a method used to separate the grain from the ears of corn.
By the time photographer Henry Taunt captured this scene, the use of the flail had already become a fading memory across much of Britain.
It was being replaced by steam, I bet this old lad wasn't complaining about that too much!
