Ethiopian-American contemporary visual artist Julie Meheretu has been listed as one of the 100 most influential people of 2020 by Time Magazine. Julie is known for her abstract paintings of 3d landscapes that represent different social-political occurrences and changes.

Born in 1970 in Addis Ababa, Julie currently lives in the United States. She received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Kalamazoo College in Kalamazoo Michigan and did her junior year at Cheikh Anta Diop University (UCAD) in Dakar, Senegal. She later earned a Master’s of Fine Art with honors from The Rhode Island School of Design.

Julie has received many prestigious awards throughout her career including the 2001 Penny Mccall Award. In 2005 she was named as one of the recipients of the MacArthur Fellowship, and in 2015 she received the US Department of State Medal of Arts from former secretary of state, John Kerry. Julie’s work has been exhibited in different museums and biennials, most recently at the 2019 Venice Biennale’s 58th International exhibition. #News
