《鴛鴦-上》by B

《鴛鴦-下》by B

//閒聊似乎是英國工作很重要的一部分(不知道我老闆認不認同?)。有天女同事們又在吱吱喳喳,談論著喜歡男孩子穿怎樣的穿搭。其中一個女同事說她喜歡「Roadman」。

“What the x do I know about fashion?” by Y

//Small talk seems to be a vital part of working in the UK (not sure if my boss would agree?). One day, my female colleagues were chatting away as usual, discussing their favourite boys outfit. One of my colleagues said she liked the “roadman” style.
“Do you mean construction workers?” I asked, curious. I had seldom heard girls in Hong Kong adoring this style. What’s more, it was hard to associate my young and polite British colleague with construction workers’ style...//

//「那香港的男生多數穿怎樣的衣服?」

“What the x do I know about fashion?” by Y

// “So, what do boys in Hong Kong usually wear?”
I was speechless. Never given the topic much thought, what came into mind for me were canned fashion brands like Uniqlo, GU, and Zara.

Back home, I turned to Google again. However, many of the search results didn’t reflect what Hong Kong people normally wear nowadays.
There had been celebrities/ fashion icons like Anita Mui and Leslie Cheung, who were once-in-a-century superstars. A more recent singer-actor, Edison Chen, co-founded the Hong Kong-based fashion label CLOT; but the brand has long turned to China and global markets. Needless to mention the historical Cheung Saam (long coat), Hanfu (Han Chinese outfits), Tanka (boatmen outfits), and Hakka style clothing, which are all out of date…//

Far Far Away … from HOME > by B

//文其實寫了好一陣子,現在才post,並非因為融入英國慢活的56k生活模式,而是出文章有先後次序之分,請見諒(哈)。

(English version below ↓↓↓ )

What comes to mind when you think of Hong Kong?

We as Hongkongers, a community molded within a melting pot of cultures, often find it hard to tell our own story.

In fact, this has perplexed even the famous Hong Kong novelist, Yesi. Before Hong Kong’s sovereignty transfer to China in 1997, Yesi observed that in Hong Kong literature, there were either grand narratives of Hong Kong as a cosmopolitan city or a British colony; or there were the trivial everyday stories of nobody. These stories seemed to be always stitched from the canvas of other nations, other cultures.

“When we listen to other people's stories,
However flushed with success
It’s the story of somebody else”

In remembrance of the 9th anniversary of Yesi’s death, we would like to put this great question to all UK Hongkongers - how would we like to tell our story?

(English version below ↓↓↓ )

Caught between the margins of two empires - China and the UK, Hong Kong and its culture are constantly defined through a process of “othering”. Some say it’s a “fusion of the East and West”, which only implies Hong Kong is marginally Chinese or marginally Western - its dual impossibility to be on either side.

To some scholars, this marks Hong Kong’s hybridity; a characteristic unique to Hong Kong culture - like the distinct flavour of yuenyeung, the traditional Hong Kong drink.

But in the absence of the “other”, what is Hong Kong?

Who are we as a person, if not drawing reference to others?

Is understanding the self through the lenses of the others questionable?

Besides comparing with others, is there another way to understand who we are?

We present to you our upcoming exhibition: “Strange Faces in the Mirror” - where we will explore how our culture looks like directly through the eyes of other cultural group members.

We are honoured to have local UK and Hong Kong artists come together in exchange of ideas and artwork on their own culture, as well as interpretations of the "other" culture.

Come join this experiment to rediscover Hong Kong, and at the same time reflect upon your own identity and culture.

Watch this space for details of our launch event, coming soon this month!

Upcoming exhibition - “Strange Faces in the Mirror”

Date: 4-12 March 2023 (9 days)
Time: 1200-1800
Venue: Saan1, 5 Kelvin St, Manchester M4 1ET

We as Hongkongers, a community molded within a melting pot of cultures, often find it hard to tell our own story. Our stories seem to be always stitched from the canvas of other nations, other cultures.

In the absence of the “other”, what are we as Hongkongers, or even as a person?

“Strange Faces in the Mirror” is an exhibition where we delve into this question of cultural identity. A sociological theory called the “Looking-glass Self” suggests that we come to understand ourselves through the reactions and behaviours of “others”, serving as a “mirror” that helps us construct the concept of self. Inspired by this theory, this exhibition puts us in dialogue in hopes of rediscovering UK and Hong Kong culture through the lens of the “others”.

Can you be our mirror, and we will be yours?
