Allah تعالى has said in His oft-recited criterion:
﴿كُلُّ نَفْسٍ ذَائِقَةُ الْمَوْتِ ۗ وَنَبْلُوكُم بِالشَّرِّ وَالْخَيْرِ فِتْنَةً ۖ وَإِلَيْنَا تُرْجَعُونَ﴾
(What may mean:) ❝Every soul will taste death, then to Us you will ˹all˺ be returned.❞
And He has said:
(What may mean:) ❝We will certainly test you with a touch of fear and famine and loss of property, life, and crops. Give good news to those who patiently endure — who, when disaster strikes them, say, ‘Indeed we belong to Allah, and indeed to Him we will return.’❞
إنا لله وإنا إليه راجعون
The Musnid (collector of Asanid), the Dhakir (rememberer of Allah تعالى), the Salih (upright man), ash-Shaykh ash-Sharif Mulay Idris bin Muhammad al-Mahi bin ʿAbdi’l Kabir al-Kettani al-Idrisi al-Hasani has passed away. We pray that Allah سبحانه وتعالى has mercy on him and is pleased with him, that He sanctifies his soul and expands his grave, and that He grants us Madad by this great scholar.
He was martyred by the COVID-19 virus after being seriously ill on the eighth of Shaʿban, 1443 A.H., corresponding with the ninth of February, 2022 C.E., in the city of Souira, Morocco.
Al-Fatihah and Ya Sin for him.
My deepest condolences to our Shaykhan, د. حمزة الكتاني and الحسن بن علي الكتاني, and all of the members, Fuqara’, and Muhibbin of Al al-Kettani حفظهم الله.

Shaykh al-Hassan b. 'Ali al-Kettani حفظه الله,
"In this case, so long as he is following the Qur'an and he is following the Islamic Law, you must obey him. What does this mean? It means that we must obey our Muslim leaders as long as they are following Islam - whether wicked or good. That is up to them. We are asked to obey their orders so long as they ask us to do what Allah asked us to do. That is just insisting on something which is already obligatory. If he insists on something permissible then this makes it obligatory since it is an order. Then we must follow him because we must obey our leaders."
...
"Sometimes people exaggerate in this. They start asking Muslims to obey any kind of leaders. When the Prophet (ﷺ) said 'even if he is a slave,' then there are other narrations that say 'so long as he leads you by the Holy Book.' That means the Islamic law. If he does not pay attention to the Islamic Law, he just follows his desires or any type of law, or he is a secular leader - then he is not from us. We should not follow these types of people. We are required to follow Muslim leaders who follow Islam, not leaders who do not follow Islam. We are not concerned about them. Do not mix between these two."

⚠️ Clarification on tawassul, istighatha and dua ⚠️
by shaykh Hassan bin Ali Al Kettani (Morocco)_
*﷽* Some confusions have recently re-emerged around issues of utmost importance as they concern the oneness of Allah ﷻ and creator of all things. Many of my beloved brothers and respected sisters have had questions around dua, tawassul and istighatha.
These concepts are often confused and words from our righteous scholars misinterpreted.
To make the matter simple, we can identify three cases:
1 - Asking Allah by mentioning the status of the Prophet ﷺ. Many scholars have allowed this practice, even though others forbade it as they saw it as unbefitting to mention any name other than Allah’s names when supplicating Him and by virtue of the principle of “sadd adh-dhara'i'” (blocking the means) which the malikis and others rely on. According to this principle, an action which can lead to harm should be prevented. *When observing the reality, we can see that this permissible practice is often a stepping stone to falling into other forms of dua which are impermissible, innovated or even shirk.* Therefore, prohibiting this practice in order to block the means to evil is a wise opinion.
2 - The second case is related to Muslims who ask the Prophet (peace be upon him) or righteous people who have passed away to intercede for them while they are in their grave. They ask them to ask Allah on their behalf. *This is evil and a clear innovation.* It comes very close to the mindset of the polytheists as described in the Quran when they justified worshiping idols by saying “We only worship them so that they may bring us nearer to Allah in position." *This practice is at the verge of shirk but falls short of it*. It is based on false interpretation of certain authentic texts related to the life of Prophets in their grave or martyrs being alive.
3- The third case is those who ask righteous people who have passed away to fulfil their needs. *This is shirk akbar and a great calamity for a person's religion.*
_I remind all my brothers that labeling someone a kafir or a mushrik is another matter and an issue of qadha (judgment). It is for qualified experts to analyse the actions and explore if excuses are applicable before passing a judgement. Therefore, you are only required to learn the concepts to protect yourself from falling into mistakes and wisely advise others._
I would like to end with two pieces of advice:
The first is to my beloved brothers and respected sisters: *let’s return to the simplicity and purity of worship of the early generations who focused on sound practices and good deeds away from ambiguities.*
Let’s remind ourselves of the beautiful invitation of Allah ﷻ himself:
وَإِذَا سَأَلَكَ عِبَادِى عَنِّى فَإِنِّى قَرِيبٌ ۖ أُجِيبُ دَعْوَةَ ٱلدَّاعِ إِذَا دَعَانِ ۖ فَلْيَسْتَجِيبُوا۟ لِى وَلْيُؤْمِنُوا۟ بِى لَعَلَّهُمْ يَرْشُدُونَ
“And when My servants ask you, [O Muhammad], concerning Me - indeed I am near. I respond to the invocation of the supplicant when he calls upon Me.”
Let’s act upon the authentic saying of the best of Mankind ﷺ:
“If you ask, ask from Allah. If you seek help, seek help from Allah.”
My second advice is to the scholars, teachers and students of knowledge who strive to preserve and transmit this deen: *you have a responsibility to be mindful of your words and their impact on your listeners*. Your words can either guide or misguide. Avoid opening up topics which will create confusion for people.

There are only a few days of the month of Ramadan remaining, when the actions are multiplied and the Night of Decree is hoped for. If we did not receive the month in the best of ways, then let us part with it in the best of ways. What matters is not the deficiency of beginnings, but what matters is the perfection of endings.
I ask Allah to recompense you for what you spend with longevity in your lives, health in your bodies, expansiveness in your provision, righteousness in your children, and goodness in your endings.
