This holiday was introduced in 2014 by decree of the President of Ukraine simultaneously with the abolition of the soviet holiday of February 23. The date of October 14 was chosen because on this day the Day of the Ukrainian Cossacks and the holiday of the Intercession of the Theotokos were celebrated, and also, October 14, 1942 is considered the day of the creation of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army.

Recently, the date of these holidays was changed to October 1 due to the transition of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine and the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church from the Julian to the New Julian calendar, which allowed to harmonize the dates of fixed holidays with the Gregorian calendar and avoid discrepancies with astronomical realities that had accumulated over centuries
