Tegallalang rice terrace is located in the central part of Bali, 9 km north of Ubud. They are located at an altitude of 800 m above sea level, in a river valley.

It is believed that the terraces appeared here about 2000 years ago. According to more realistic estimates, they were founded in the IX century. But, you must admit, the age of 1200 years is also considerable. There is not much fertile land in Bali, especially in mountainous areas. And rice cultivation requires a fairly large area.

The locals found a way to sow whole fields even in hilly areas: for this they used primitive tools to hollow out steps on the hillsides. The upper flat part of the step is a field for growing rice. At the edges it is surrounded by a shaft that holds water.
