💭This is not a narrate poem but a lyric with no character in it. The title of the poem offers an atmosphere of under press.
The first stanza makes the poem as a negative, current situation.

💭Were the world free from oppression, songs would be available to the singers and dreams would be available to the dreamers. How can singers exist without songs and dreamers without dreams? The logical paradox of song-less singers and dreamless dreamers is expressing the powerful disruption caused by oppression in the lives and in the sense of being of those who are oppressed.

💭The “dark night” and “cold steel” here are symbolizing the nature facts that brings oppression to author’s living place “some lands”, and those are prevailing for present.

💭The last statement of the poem is a form of promise or prediction.
The author’s attitude changing bring a shift to the emotion. The jail represents the oppression that stress people’s lives currently, broken of jail describes the anxiousness of narrator of staying in the pressure and his intense expectation to own freedom.

💭Back to the title, for the researching of the author’s background, the “oppression” was from racism that was rampant during the pinnacle of Langston Hughes’ career in America during the early 20th century’s Harlem Renaissance. This poem expresses his wish of been liberated from the racism.
