🛑 The Athletic: Rasmus Højlund’s determination to stay at Manchester United lasted until the final week of the transfer window but ended after the defeat to Grimsby Town.

Following that match, club officials informed him he no longer had a future at United.

Despite earlier advice to consider his options, he had persisted, backing himself to compete with Benjamin Šeško in the hope of regaining Rúben Amorim’s trust through training.

Rasmus Højlund insisted on playing through a persistent foot injury rather than resting, aware of how critical the period was for Manchester United last season. Allowing it to heal would have sidelined him for up to three weeks.

Determined to help the team, he featured in nine of United’s final 10 matches, including the Europa League final in Bilbao, despite being hampered by the injury.

The one that really pains me is Højlund. I honestly believe he could have been a 25-goal-a-season striker for Manchester United. The problem wasn’t him – it was the way the team played. The system didn’t suit him. When players like Garnacho or Rashford got the ball, they looked only to shoot. The ball into the No.9 never came, even though Rasmus was making really good runs.

The fans saw it. They loved him because he fought, he ran, he gave everything, and he had to play every game because there were no other strikers. Of course, when you don’t score as a striker, people point to it again and again. But what more could he do without service?
