Wild-caught Panther chameleon π¦ (Furcifer pardalis) presented with intermittent subcutaneous swellings. Adult filarid worms are mainly found in the subscutaneous space wherease larvae (microfilariae) live in the bloodstream. Filariasis is only diagnosed in wild-caught reptiles π¦ because the parasite πͺ± needs an arthropod (which is not found in captivity) to complete its life cycle.

Myiasis is a parasitic skin disease produced by Diptera Larvae (or maggots). The female lays eggs π₯ on a cutaneous wound (see pictures) and the larvae feed on the dead tissues. Even if it's beneficial for the host at the first stage of the healing process, maggots can eat healthy tissues (when no more dead tissues are left) and predispose to deeper infection π’.

-Small fish, BIG tapeworm-
Meet Ligula intestinalis, a widespread tapeworm with a complex life cycle involving a tiny copepod, a fish π, and a birdπ¦! It can be a little tricky for a parasite πͺ± to complete its life cycle when so many different hosts are required, but this tapeworm has some amazing strategies to achieve this!
One way it makes its way from a fish host (with no desire to be caught) into its final host (the birds), is to master buoyancy! As the worm grows, and grows, and grows...(it can reach ~30% of the host's weight) it changes the buoyancy of the fish causing it to rise more easily to the surface of the water π¦. Because of this, the fish spends considerably more time at the surface and becomes an easy target for hungry birds! This allows the tapeworm to reach its final host when the fish is captures and eaten by a suitable bird species.

Snake mites 'Ophionyssus natricis' affecting a bearded dragon π².
The snake π mite is the most common ectoparasite of snakes and feed on their blood. These mites are occasionally found on lizards π¦, including bearded dragonsπ.
Their life cycle is short, about a couple of weeks, so mite infestation can spread very quickly through reptiles in the same household. Treatment may be challenging and for the individual pet typically consists on sanitation, topical and systemic acaricides, and habitat-based pesticide applications.

Hydatid cyst in kidney
Hydatid cyst is one of the most important zoonotic diseases caused by Echinococcus granulosus.
The infection is transmitted through the oral-fecal pathway through the eggs π₯ of the parasite and moreover by eating vegetables π₯¬ and food contaminated with dog πΆπΎ feces π© containing eggs π₯ of the parasite πͺ±.
Hydatid cyst can produce in the liver, lungs π« and rarely in the heart π«, breast π€±, thyroid, soft tissue of the neck and kidneys.
Hydatydic kidney cyst is a rare diseases that may go asymptomatic for years.
