Al-‘Allāmah Sulaymān Āl Ash-Shaykh (رحمه الله) said:

“Many of the people of falsehood only abandon the truth for the fear of losing their wordly [gains].”

[Ad-Durar As-Saniyyah (8/125) | Translated by Rpubs Editorial]
Shaykh Ṣāliḥ al-Luḥaydān حفظه الله was asked regarding the ruling on covering the face, and he responded:

"This is the legislated ḥijāb and covering for the female. Before, one hundred and fifty years ago, it was very rare to find a Muslim female with her face exposed. It was very, very rare. And this exposing the face of a female is something that only became apparent when the West entered into the lands of the Muslims with their ideologies and the likes, and they began to call the female to exposing her face. Before that, it was not known amongst the Muslims. It was mentioned that 'Ā'isha رضي الله عنها - the wife of the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم - that she said: 'May Allāh have mercy upon the women of the Ansār. Verily, when the verses were revealed pertaining to the ḥijāb of the veil of the female they went to their black clothing and they complete covered themselves' and she also mentioned that when they did so, their heads became like 'the heads of crows' meaning they were completely black..."

Regardless Of The Ruling, Women Have Been Covering Their Faces Throughout The Ages

Imām al-Ghazālī رحمه الله [d. 503AH] said:

"Men throughout the ages have always had their faces uncovered, and women have always gone out with their faces covered."

[Iḥyā' 'Ulūm ad-Dīn, 2/53]
Imām Abū Ḥayyān al-Andalūsī رحمه الله [d. 745AH] also mentioned the statement of as-Suddī رحمه الله who said in his tafsīr of Sūrah al-Ahzāb (33:59):

"She should cover one of her eyes, her forehead, and the other lower portion of her face, except (for one eye)."

Commenting upon this, he said: "This is the custom of the women (here) in the country of Andalūs (i.e. Spain and Portugal), today - nothing is visible from a woman's body, except for one eye."
