Another day of RNC coverage

Watching Vance's NatCon speech from last week, first of all I think he plagiarized a lot of it from my AFPAC II speech. Maybe, maybe not.

But what is really interesting is the "NatCon" insistence that America is not an idea or creed, it is a NATION. But a nation of whom? What is a nation to them? That is where the problem is. NatCon guys like Vance and Hazony or Vivek (who is adjacent) argue that America is a nation... of *some* immigrants, but not all of them?

They can't seem to provide a coherent definition of what it means to be American... it basically boils down to citizenship or something. Vance says that if his children are buried with him and his wife in his family's cemetery in Kentucky then there will be seven generations there. But what is the basis of continuity if his ancestors fought in the civil war and his children are third generation immigrants from Asia?

Vance says the continuity of our nation is established by the fact that we choose which immigrants come here at our discretion... so he is saying that so long as the massive nonwhite immigration is lawful, "permitted," "at our discretion," "on our terms," then there is some national continuity between Scots, Englishman, Germans, French, Italians... and Indians, Chinese, Koreans, Nigerians, Ashkenazim, and Venezuelans? That sounds very much like a credal, "idealist" conception of nationality to me.

Of course it goes without saying that America's "whiteness" would provide the basis for a real national identity, since ethnic Europeans descend from the same ancestors, cluster together genetically, speak languages derived from the same language tree, practice some form of Christianity, share the heritage of ancient Rome, the chivalric age, the Renaissance, the enlightenment, exploration, and industry. We look similar and act similar.

Amerinidans, Africans, Asians, and Arabs have none of this in common with us. What creates continuity between a White America and this America OTHER THAN a creed or some abstract shared ideal? According to some reports, Vance got married in a traditional Telugu wedding ceremony and his wife was raised Hindu although it's ambiguous if she even believes in God. This is not a personal attack. But even within this family, where is the continuity? Will this be the example for our nation?

Some people say that Vance's views are proximate to ours... "close enough" they say. I agree that if you listen to Vance he sounds closer to us than Burgum, Rubio, or DeSantis. But that is sort of the problem. Some say that this shows the GOP is drifting in increments closer to our position and Vance is closer in degrees towards the groypers.

But this is the wrong mental model. Vance as a Zionist and a true civic nationalist fundamentally believes the same things as the rest of the GOP, and like them draws a hard line, creates a hard distinction between him and us. People imagine that he is several ticks or degrees to the left and that there is enough fuzziness or ideological ambiguity that we might be mistaken for each other. But this is belied by Vance's strenuous and rigid objections to our worldview.

Rather, Vance is redirecting the justified racial and class anxiety away from a true alternative and back into this liberal framework using similar-sounding rhetoric. That poses a graver danger than someone weaker and less clever like Burgum or Rubio.

As Costin Alamariu himself said, and I agree with him here, it is more important to look at a flesh and blood human being and their associations such as with family, mentors, associates. Vance rolls with Hazony and Curtis Yarvin. He married a nonwhite nonChristian. He is endorsed by Shapiro. He brought in Sean Maguire, Jacob Helberg, David Sacks into the fold for Trump. Are these people Groypers and would they ever accidentally become groypers? It would be delusional to think so yet that is what people are saying.
