Latest NCERT of Class 8 is public. It covers medieval history.

If you observe closely, there is Shivaji's gold hon coin on the front page. On top of it, there is also a whole picture of Maratha Navy. Hint of what to expect in this book...

Remember, British conquered India mostly from Marathas. British also conquered Delhi from Marathas (1803). Mughals were nowhere to be seen in this fight.

And there was a time when Maratha history was given its due importance. British historians did it. Nationalist historians also did it. But in the last two-three generations, for some unknown reason, it came down. Now, after long, it is getting its due space again.

The book contains a full chapter on history of Marathas. First time for NCERT...! It talks about Shivaji's navy, his legendary exploits, global trade, social reforms, and overall cultural contribution of Marathas to India.

Brace for some more changes. Some good, some not so good.

Let the controversy begin...!

Finally, someone is speaking on Marathas chapter in the latest NCERT.

Ab tak sirf Delhi Sultanate and Mughals ke portrayal ka debate chal raha tha for last 2 days. None was even reading and commenting on Maratha chapter. Even for criticism they didn't read it for 2 days. That is the national level apathy. It very well justifies why Marathas needed a separate chapter altogether. Their significance is still not into the consciousness of the nation properly.

We have Mughal era, then Maratha era and then British era. Note that.

Finally someone wrote about it. But see the manner... even here in this article, it is more about Delhi centric dynasties. Despite the headline and first few paragraphs about Marathas, the focus immediately goes back to Delhi immediately. This is really unfortunate.

Provocative headline...

Mention of Razia and Nur Jahan, although significant, is not the touchstone of women's role in History.

All latest NCERTs actually provide much well rounded appreciation of women's role in History. In various capacities, from various social background and from various regions. It is also gender inclusive...

TheHindu, your people should actually read each of latest 6/7/8 standard social science books.

During the expedition, Rajendra Chola I defeated several kings and chieftains. The king celebrated the victory by assuming the title ‘Gangaikonda Cholan’. He also built Gangaikonda Cholapuram in the present-day Ariyalur district, along with the Gangaikonda Cholisvaram, the Shiva temple that was the jewel in his crown.
