Dmitrov Kremlin, view above.

Like many other Russian fortresses, it was built out of wood - so only ramparts exist today.

Re-used (or built upon?) Byzantine lintel in the Chalcis of Syria, commemorating the restoration of a rampart by Isidore of Miletus.

The city reached its height during the Byzantine period.

A beautiful Neo-Russian catholicon of Saint Seraphim of Sarov in the modern monastery of Saint Anastasia of Rome in Zhitomir, Ukraine. A rare example of a newly founded monastery that has already come to prosperity, its very existence is now, alas, threatened by the ongoing persecution of Orthodoxy in the Ukraine.

It is often forgotten that it was to the present-day Czechoslovak lands, which were then part of Great Moravia, which later fell due to the invasion of the Hungarians, that the Equal-to-the-Apostles enlighteners of the Slavs were sent.

The lost Molohov gates in the ancient Russian city of Smolensk.

The original medieval building was blown up by retreating Napoleon forces, and later reconstructed in an eclectic style with neo-Gothic elements. The lower part of the newly built tower became a local lore museum, and a church dedicated to the gate icon, which had miraculously survived the explosion, was established in the upper part.

Later, the tower and the remaining medieval sections of the surrounding city walls were destroyed by the Communists

A unique complex of the Kazan Church and its bell tower made in the form of an ancient lighthouse - one of the few such towers in Russia - in the village of Arpachevo.

While the church has already been partially restored, the bell tower, which is much more difficult to complete, is waiting for its time.
