The charts give information about the steel industry of the United Kingdom from 1970 to 2000. Overall, the demand for steel in the UK consistently decreased, as did local production. Conversely, the figure for imports bucked this declining trend, closing the gap with domestic output. At the same time, the number of workers in this industry also sharply fell.
In 1970, the total demand for steel stood at 200 million tons (mt), which was the highest figure, while the UK production followed closely. Over the following three decades, both figures gradually declined, closing at half their 1970 level, with the total demand still slightly in the lead. By contrast, this declining trend corresponded to a steady increase in steel imports. From a negligible amount in 1970, the import of steel eventually caught up to local production, eliminating the initial huge gap.
When it comes to the number of staff in the UK steel industry, the highest number of workers was recorded in 1970, at a striking 50 thousand people. This figure had more than halved to 20 thousand by 1990, after which the decline considerably slowed down.
