Culture is what we are, civilisation is what we have.

This was the essay topic of UPSC CSE MAINS in 2020. The students found it so difficult because the basic premises of this essay wasnt very clear with them. They werent able to clearly understand the difference between culture and civilization.

In this series of post we will try to explain you the important key points which are required for basic undertanding of this topic followed by the dedicated class which will encompass different arguments of scholars.

Culture encapsulates the ideas, customs, social behaviors, and artifacts of a particular community or society. It's the fabric of thoughts, practices, and material objects that define a group's way of life. Culture encompasses language, religion, cuisine, social habits, music, and arts, which are transmitted through learning from one generation to another.

Civilization, on the other hand, is a complex societal structure that emerges when several conditions are met, including urban development, social stratification, the emergence of state forms or governance, and the development of complex systems of communication, trade, and technology. Civilizations are marked by their advancements in various domains such as architecture, governance, and the sciences, reflecting a high degree of cultural, technological, and organizational complexity.

Key Similarities and Differences

Similarities:

■ Both culture and civilization are products of human creativity and social interaction.
■ They encompass the knowledge, beliefs, and practices that guide human behavior and interaction.
■ Culture and civilization both evolve over time, influenced by internal developments and external interactions.

Differences:

■ Culture refers to the way of life and its manifestations in a particular society, while civilization refers to a more advanced state of societal organization that includes multiple cultures.

■ Culture can exist without the framework of a civilization (e.g., nomadic tribes), but a civilization requires a complex culture to sustain its structure.

■ Civilizations bring together various cultures under a unifying system of governance and social organization, often leading to the development of cities, laws, and significant technological advancements.

And do you know, that civilisation and cultural aspects affects our international relations as well.
