Srinagar, Oct 14 (KNO): Mayor Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC), Junaid Azim Mattu on Thursday called on Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha at Raj Bhavan here.

The Mayor and Lt Governor held discussions on a variety of issues including safe and secure accommodation for elected Corporators of SMC, empowerment of elected public representatives, ensuring continued success of public welfare schemes, and the ongoing developmental initiatives in Srinagar City.

The Lt Governor appreciated the suggestions put forth by the SMC Mayor and impressed upon him to continue his endeavours for the welfare of people.

The Lt Governor assured him of all possible support for the holistic development of Srinagar city. He said that UT Government is steadfast to take the cities and villages of J&K to new heights of development and prosperity.

*Muazzin injured after attacked by mentally unsound person in Masjid*

Srinagar, Oct 14 (KNO): A 75-year old man was injured after he was attacked by a mentally unsound person with an axe in Bagh locality of north Kashmir's Bandipora district on Thursday evening.

Official sources told the news agencyβ€”Kashmir News Observer (KNO) that a man identified as Ali Mohammad Malik(75) a resident of Bagh was calling for a prayer for Magrib prayers at Masjid-Umer at Bagh Bandipora when he was attacked by a mentally unsound person.

The mentally unsound person attacked him with an axe from the back side, leaving him in a pool of blood, they said, adding that the injured was rushed to the district hospital Bandipora wherefrom he was shifted to Srinagar hospital for treatment.

A police official when contracted in this regard said that they are verifying the incidentβ€”(KNO)

*Soldier shoots self dead in Kupwara*

Kupwara, Oct 14 (GNS): A soldier allegedly shot himself dead with his service rifle at a camp in Kupwara district of north Kashmir, official source said on Thursday.

They said Sepoy Deeraj Kumar of Engineering Unit was posted in a camp at Kralpora when his shot himself. Soon, the sources said, he was shifted to military hospital Drugmulla wherefrom he was referred to Command Hospital Udhampur for further treatment. Later he succumbed to the injuries, they said. It was immediately not known why the soldier took the extreme step. (GNS)
*JCO killed, 2 soldiers injured in Poonch firefight*

Poonch, Oct 14, KNT: An Army officer has been killed while two soldiers sustained injuries during a fire fight between soldiers and militants in Poonch Sector.

Two days ago five soldiers including a JCO were killed in the same sector.

Sources told news agency Kashmir News Trust that three days after establishing contact with militants, a JCO was killed in the exchange of fire while two soldiers also sustained injuries who have been evacuated to the hospital. (KNT)

Army man killed in Poonch gunfight, traffic on highway stopped

An Army man was killed in an encounter that broke out between militants and security forces in Bhata Dhurian village near Bhimber Gali area of Poonch.

The area where the encounter broke out is part of a forest pocket that runs through Dehra Ki Gali where an encounter started on Monday morning in which five Army men lost their lives.

Officials told the news agencyβ€”Kashmir News Observer (KNO) that in Bhata Dhurian village of Poonch, located near Bhimber Gali Army installation, operation was launched on Thursday morning and teams of Army and police were conducting intensive searches in the area when the gunfight broke out in which one Army man was killed.

They further stated that there are also reports about the injuries to a few other army men. However, there was no confirmation in this regard.
The authorities on the other hand have stopped vehicular traffic on Jammu-Poonch NHW near BG in Mendhar.

*Army jawan arrested for passing secret information to Pakistan*

Ambala, Oct 14: Haryana Police on Thursday said it arrested an Army personnel for allegedly passing secret information to Pakistani intelligence agency ISI.

Rohit Kumar was arrested on Wednesday evening on a tip-off, it said.

Kumar is a resident of Kodwa Khurd village in the Naraingarh area in Ambala district. Currently, he is employed as Havaldar in an engineering regiment of the Army in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh, the police said.

He had come to his village a few days back on leave, Superintendent of Police Hamid Akhtar said.

Akhtar said police had received an input about Kumar and on the basis of which he was taken into custody.

During interrogation, it came to the fore that he was in contact with a Pakistani agent and was sharing secret information and photographs to Pakistani intelligence agency, the SP said.

He said Kumar two mobile phones, which were used for sharing information, were seized.

The police will check all the details of his mobile phones, he added.

Akhtar said Kumar joined the Army in 2012 and had been indulging in espionage activities since 2018.

Police said during interrogation, Kumar confessed that he had shared some information with the Pakistani intelligence agency.

A case has been registered against him under the provisions of the Official Secrets Act, they said.

Kumar was produced before a court on Thursday evening, which remanded him to police custody for seven days, police said. PTI

Leopards Kills 6 Sheep, As Many Others Missing



Budgam : At least half a dozen sheep were killed and as many others are missing when two leopards barged inside a tin shed where the livestock was kept by a man in Arwah Beerwah area of central Kashmir’s Budgam district.

Official sources told GNS that two leopards struck the tin shed of one Gulzar Ahamd Chopan at Arwah Beerwah, killing six of them and while as many others are said to be missing. A police official told GNS that claims by the owner as regards missing of sheep is being verified. (GNS)

In a statement, issued to Kashmir News Service (KNS), Anjuman said that the state authorities did not allow congregational Friday prayers to be held at Jama Masjid Srinagar today.

β€œHeavy deployment of forces was carried out since early morning in the entire area. When the Auqaf employees opened up the gates of the mosque police personnel forced them to close all the gates and no namazis were allowed inside the mosque for offering the obligatory Friday prayers,” the statement reads.

Anjuman said that the earlier pretext of Covid pandemic by the authorities to prevent Muslims from offering Friday prayers at jama Masjid stands completely exposed today.

β€œIt is extremely unfortunate and disdainful of the authorities to disallow Muslims of the valley from praying at the Central mosque by use of brute force and cause them hurt and grief. Muslims of the valley denounce this injustice and interference in religious freedom in the strongest terms,” it reads. (KNS)
