An earthquake with a magnitude of 6.5 struck near Guadeloupe in the Caribbean Sea on Monday, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS).

The earthquake was recorded at a depth of 9 kilometers at 12:38 pm UTC. The epicenter was registered 162 kilometers east of Beausejour, French Guadeloupe, on the Leeward Islands.

The earthquake follows the Category 5 hurricane Melissa that struck the Caribbean islands today. Major floods and landslides are expected in the region in the following days.
