Ideas to check background

We are searching for a groom for my sister. I am out of country and it seems my parents are real lazy and not doing a thorough check on the "payyan". How does one find details? My parents were always ones who took life very lightly and all they did was just visit the groom's house and family.
Any ideas? This is an arranged marriage and I don't know how they make decisions based on a single visit.

'Leave your footwear outside'

What's with this practice of asking people to leave their footwear outside, common in Kerala? I'm not talking about homes, but about public places like shops, banks and even hospitals!!

Given that there is no guarantee on the health of the feet of various people who come to that establishment, isn't it possible cause for contamination? Especially hospitals, where there are already chances of hospital based infections.

I have never taken my footwear off while entering any public place, and to be fair, nobody has insisted till now.

Could the reason behind be that we had earlier all activities closer to the ground - e.g. eating while squatting?. Although ground based practices have moved on, taking footwear off has not?
