Onam celebrations - Western countries edition

Take a shot every time you spot one of these

1. The emcee asks the crowd to make some noise “ellarum onnu ushaar aayike”, “kelkunilla…”
2. The emcee is also accompanied by another one who wants to flaunt the new found accent.
3. Gold sponsor is a realtor.
4. Other sponsors include grocery shops and restaurants with names like green/ red chilles, kayaloram, tharavadu, spice hut, etc.
5. Chief guest is a “pallil achan” (parent of one of the organisers) who recycles his speech from 1995.
6. Crowd is bored of his speech, loses patience and claps, forcing him to prematurely end his speech.
7. Shy and awkward Maveli comes with a solo chenda and graces the audience.
8. Bharathanatyam - adigam onnum parayan illa.
9. This is followed by Thiruvathira. One chechi who clearly “doesn’t like the attention”, misses the memo and wears a different coloured blouse or does a different hairdo.
10. “Aduthathaayi oru paatu aayalo” - emcee screams.
11. This could go either way - aunty sings with a strangled tone or underdog uncle stuns the audience.
12. Kids perform to age inappropriate songs like “kaavalaya”, “moha mundiri” etc.
13. “Ellarum nammude kutti starsinu oru nalla kayyadi koduthey”
14. Preteens and teens again perform item numbers.
15. Girl group performs a medley.
16. Boy (men) group does a medley with some comedy dialogues sprinkled here and there.
17. “Oru thakarpan performance ayrnu” - more screams.
18. Madha souhardha dance - thiruvathira kali + margam kali + oppana. The co-emcee describes the dances and the significance with the accent of course.
19. Fashion show.
20. Crowning “Malayali manga”, “based” on results from an FB photo contest where you’ll hear from your classmate who you haven’t heard from in ages, asking for votes.
21. Prizes for best Onam themed “family photo”
22. People who you will spot: girl with a full sleeve black velvet blouse, double shot if the same girl has loose hair and a nose piercing, girl wearing dhavani with a North Indian twist, guys who have stayed committed to Premam mundu combination, the OG immigrant aunty who moved long back and is too cool for settu saari, but takes wardrobe inspiration from Margaret thatcher, another older immigrant uncle who moved long ago, comes solo, eats sadhya and leaves. He looks so “naadan” that you would think you were home. You catch a glimpse of “Pilechan and Sarasu” moment.
23. People who you will meet: that achaayan kunju who’s on “paavaada visa” but has a chip on his shoulder and his fourth question upon meeting you is “shambalam ethra undu?”. Self proclaimed cool ones with a sense of superiority bringing their white trophy friends (in traditional wear). That “maalaaka” exchanging fake pleasantries and as soon the other person leaves, bitches you about the person who just left. Brief exchange with Gold sponsor realtor bro. Newly graduated folks asking for referrals and your contacts.
24. You have a super mid sadhya and wonder if the event is organised by the “pookala kaashu adichu maatal” gang, giving you mild PTSD. Someone mentions “Cheta ichiri choru” from Kalyanaraman.
25. Vadam vali - it’s fun!
26. Some more games.
27. More games for couples, giving “Valkannadi” vibes.
28. Photo shoot and reels eduppu.
29. You sense some tension brewing and something is off in the background.
30. You have some complaints but you’re still glad you made it and leave with some nostalgia. You still look forward to the next one.

Note: This is just an observation. Not to belittle anyone. Veruthey oru resathinu ennu kootiya mathi. Appo ellavarkum Happy Onam!

Do you think Kerala might become like the US Healthcare?

I read in the news that many asset management companies like Vanguard, BlackRock, and Blackstone are investing heavily in hospitals in Kerala, such as KIMS, ASTER, and BMH.

They are not only investing in multi specialty hospitals but also in smaller ones.

My concern is that insurance premiums and medical costs are increasing day by day; hospitals charge heavily for medicines and even for waiting time. Most people cannot afford to cover these expenses. This is the same reason why the U.S. healthcare system faces so many problems.

Will People afford it? And will the government take action on it?
