I made a game based on Malaysia

Hey everyone!

I just wanted to share a game I’ve been developing — it’s a game set in Malaysia, filled with local culture, folklore, and atmosphere that I’ve always wanted to bring into a video game world.

One of the CG artworks features the female protagonist, Hui Lin, standing before the Petronas Twin Towers (KLCC) — a sight that every Malaysian will instantly recognize.

Hui Lin also wears a Malaysian “SMK” school uniform with a coat during the story.



What is the game genre? It’s a Pixel Art + Anime style RPG horror game!

Players will explore eerie locations, find key items, solve puzzles, and even engage in real-time battles. The story offers multiple endings, inspired by classics like Corpse Party, Misao, and The Witch’s House.



Of course, a Malaysian game wouldn’t be complete without some local food and drinks!

800PLUS

Melo

In the game, you can find items like “800PLUS” and “Melo”, which restore your VP (Vital Points) — basically like MP in other RPGs, used for activating skills.



Parang

Since the game features battles, players can equip the Parang, a traditional curved blade widely used in Malaysia for daily tasks like clearing paths or fieldwork.

Here, it becomes a tool for fighting off supernatural enemies!



No Malaysian horror story is complete without some folklore spirits…

Orang Minyak Attacking

According to Malay folklore, Orang Minyak is a creature that abducts young women by night.

and yes… it won’t target the male protagonist 😅



Penanggal Illustration

Hantu Penanggal is a terrifying floating head with dangling entrails, one of the most disturbing local ghosts you’ll ever encounter.

Players will need to face and survive encounters with these entities throughout the story!



Character - Mona

A mysterious character in the game, Mona Diana, known by many as “The Undying Witch.”

No matter how many times she’s killed, she always comes back.

She’s an original character in our story... or perhaps, she was inspired by something that once existed closer to home.

I’ve always wanted to create a game that represents Malaysia.

Years ago, I even tried to make a Pokémon ROM hack based on a Malaysian region:

Unfortunately, that project didn’t work out due to time and resource constraints.

But this time, after 6 years of development, I’ve finally

almost completed my dream project — Even20: The Interference of Parallels.
It’s made with RPG Maker, and though it’s been a long and challenging journey, the full release is coming next month!

Parents rejecting my partner due to ethnicity - what should I do?

Hi everyone,

I (Malay) met my partner (British Muslim) online last year in the UK, we’re in our late twenties. We started as friends and later made our intentions for marriage. I’ve met his family - his mom and sisters welcomed me and have been very supportive.

When I told my parents, my dad was calm and told me to “see how things go.” My mom couldn’t accept him because he’s of a different ethnicity. My brother initially supported us but later sided with my mom, when she would get upset when I would bring him up from time to time in conversations, saying I’m blind in love.

Now, my mom and brother refuse to talk about my partner at all, while my dad says I can marry whoever I want once I have a stable job, but for now, he won’t move forward.

My parents have never met or spoken to my partner yet they already formed strong opinions based on stereotypes. Even though my partner has been wanting to meet them since last year. Through this experience, I realised my parents are not very open to mixed marriages however I kept praying that parents will eventually accept him. If I end things, I know I’ll regret it deeply and will resent myself and my parents. But if I go forward, I risk being disowned and causing major heartbreak to the family as I’m the only daughter. I also keep thinking about my parents’ health and age.

I’ve always been obedient to the family, and because I’m being persistent about him - my family are viewing it as being disrespectful and not respecting my parents’ wishes.

Has anyone gone through something similar? How did you handle parental disapproval, especially when culture and ethnicity were the barriers?

Malaysian Chinese, when & how did Chinese/China influence beat Western influence here??

I'm a millenial (aka internet boomer) banana who came back to Msia after 8 years of studying in the West. One word: wth? Overnight, Chinese influence seems to have taken over and kicked out the Western stuff from my childhood. Just going to name a few

Western media - During my school years even in SMK and SJKC we were listening to American pop. TSwift, Black Eye Peas, Usher. Chinese community seem to have wiped the existence of Hollywood/US media from their mind.
General use of English - In work, on the street; Default language among even younger generation is heavily Chinese skewed. And im in the tech sector
Dining - Western restaurant dining is exterminated, replaced by 酸菜鱼 and 麻辣 everywhere. Asian restaurants aren't any cheaper, so it's not due to price.
Nightlife - Night clubbing, something I used to associate as a very western thing to do, is now Mandopop. Linked to the point of western media above. Chinese drinking/partying used to be called cringe or "for sleazy uncles" with lalazai on stage and cocktail girls wearing Carlsberg dress. Not anymore

I'm not surprised that Western influence is lesser. We are closer to China. I'm surprised at how fast and how totally gonezo it is.

PS I'm not trying to stir a West vs East thing here. Just genuinely curious how the chinese community collectively flipped sides in what feels like no time
