My ex-roommate opened a credit card in my name because “I wasn’t using my credit anyway”

I still can’t believe this actually happened.

Last year, I was living with a roommate I’d known since freshman year. We got along fine - split bills, took turns cleaning, even shared groceries sometimes. It wasn’t perfect, but it worked.

Then one day, I started getting mail from a bank I’d never used before. I figured it was junk, so I ignored it. A week later, another letter came, but this one said “Welcome to your new credit card account.” I don’t even have a credit card, so my stomach dropped.

I called the number on the letter, and after a few verification questions, the rep told me there was an active account under my name - same address, same phone number. I froze. I asked them to read out the email linked to the account, and it was almost mine… except one letter was different.

I hung up and immediately asked my roommate if she knew anything about it. She barely looked up from her phone and said, “Oh yeah, that’s me. I just used your info for a small purchase. You weren’t using your credit anyway, and I needed to get approved for something.”

Like it was no big deal.

I lost it. I told her that’s literally fraud, and she just shrugged and said, “You’re so dramatic. It’s not like I stole money from you.”

I spent the next few weeks on calls with the bank and credit bureaus getting the account shut down and a fraud alert placed. Luckily, nothing major went through, but it was such a pain. But my credit score fell down significantly. All those years of hard work for nothing.

The part that still gets me is how calm she was about it. No apology, no guilt. She honestly acted like I was the one overreacting. I moved out a month later and blocked her on everything.

Every time I think about it, I still can’t believe someone could justify doing that to a person they live with. The level of entitlement is unreal.
