Stop Killing Games

Hey guys, I just wanted to mention this since it seems like it's on the rise again. I'd like to hopefully get it to the eyes of some people who haven't already seen it and can make a tangible difference. I personally care very deeply for games preservation.

For those unaware, the stop killing games initiative is a petition to get EU lawmakers to address the systematic destruction of video games. If it reaches 1m signatures, the EU is obligated to at least give a definitive answer and potentially write a bill that addresses it one way or another. If you are an EU citizen, and you care about the preservation of video games please sign the petition here, there can't be any change if no one tries. Anyways, thank you for reading. Seriously, we are near the end and slowly crawling up in the last week. People need to ignore the drama and focus on the goal.

STOP KILLING GAMES!

Edge is finally ruined for me

The day finally arrived where Edge is no longer a viable browser for me.

I’m sure to get hate just for the fact I’ve been an Edge user for a long time (since it became Chromium based) and for the most part, I’ve enjoyed using it.

I’m not super bothered about privacy issues with browsers, I know I’m again probably in the minority for that but it is what it is. Edge has been quick, performant and just always got the job done. Until today, where suddenly address bar search has been hijacked by Copilot.

Now, if you start typing in the address bar, after a few words it will move the default ‘Google search’ option down one and replace the top option with ‘Ask Copilot’.

No amount of settings changes, regedit shenanigans or otherwise will block it or change it back. Microsoft have officially ruined Edge once and for all.

This was more of a rant than anything else. I’m now in the market for other browsers. I won’t go back to Firefox because it doesn’t play nice with a lot of my other workflows. Tried ‘Ungoogled Chromium’ but that doesn’t even allow you to use Google as a search engine so that’s ruled out, I’ll maybe check out Brave, not sure yet.

Rant over!

Edit: thanks to someone for pointing me to edge://flags. I had a little look at everything with Copilot in the name and disabled them one by one to see if they resolved this nuisance behaviour. Funnily enough, an option named “Omnibox Consumer: Enable Copilot Chat” was responsible for this weirdness. Disabling it and relaunching Edge has gotten rid of the Ask Copilot nonsense. I don’t know why it’s hidden away as a flag and not a normal setting but, there you go.

Unfortunately for Microsoft, this all happened after I’d spent time moving to Brave so I won’t be using Edge anyway.
