We're now one step closer towards a male contraceptive pill. A clinical trial of YCT-529 showed that it suppressed sperm production with "no clinically relevant safety issues."

I wrote about YCT-529 in a piece for American Greatness last year called "Emasculation Nation." YCT-529 works by blocking the body's access to vitamin A (retinol), which suppresses sperm production. Interfering with vitamin A metabolism, especially over the long term, is a bad idea.
As I wrote in the article, "Vitamin A isn’t just involved in sperm production. Vitamin A deficiencies cause blindness, scaly skin, decreased immunity, and stunted growth. Vitamin A also has a vital role to play in brain health. A recent study showed that 'vitamin A deficiency contributes to the pathogenesis and progression of Alzheimer’s disease' by allowing amyloid plaques to accumulate in the brain. That’s about as bad as it gets. Unfortunately, no one will do the kind of long-term studies that would be needed to establish, conclusively, whether this drug is safe for the brain."

So pretty soon we'll probably have hundreds of thousands or even millions of men taking this drug, whose long-term safety, including its potential role in accelerating the progression of dementia, is completely unknown.
Classic.
