The advent of the internet, social media in particular, has gathered significant popularity among teenagers lately. This is essay aims to explore both advantages and disadvantages of social media concerning its impact on teenagers.
To begin with, it is imperative to acknowledge that social media do offer myriad advantages for the adolescent demographic. Firstly, the internet comprises a plethora of diverse information resources that students may deem valuable in enhancing their productivity. For instance, students can leverage the vast reservoir of available information to facilitate the composition of their academic dissertations while graduating. Secondly, contemporaneously, they possess the capability to engage in synchronous discussions on specific subjects, facilitated by real-time online platforms such as Telegram and Zoom within the ambit of social media. Lastly, teenagers have the opportunity to acquire knowledge in various subjects without the constraints of geographical limitations.
On the other hand, social media manifests an array of disadvantages for teenagers as well. Firstly, adolescents are susceptible to becoming targets of online extremist factions, which often direct their focus toward younger demographics, capitalizing on their heightened vulnerability. Secondarily, the pervasive utilization of internet platforms such as Instagram, Facebook, and TikTok can lead to deleterious effects on an individual's physical and mental well-being, stemming from excessive usage. For example, many teenagers now have problems with their eyes, coupled with diminished self-esteem as a result of constant comparison with those "lucky" ones on the internet. Finally, they may waste their valuable time and energy which they can use for better purposes like preparing for a university.
In conclusion, while there are some benefits of social media such as access to the huge reservoir of information available, it has also negative effects on teenagers since it can harm them both physically and mentally.
