Today, together with a group of foreign settlers in Nizhny Novgorod, we explored one of the city’s most atmospheric corners — the Protected Quarters. This historic neighborhood has preserved wooden houses from the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
Our guide was Pavel Gnilorybov, a historian, tour guide, and the author of the "Architectural Excesses" media project.
Once a modest residential area on the city’s edge, the district was home to ordinary residents — and even famous writers like Korolenko and Gorky. Over the decades, it stood on the brink of vanishing.
In the 2010s, things began to change: houses were granted heritage status, residents relocated, and cultural festivals brought the area back to life, drawing in volunteers and restoration efforts.
We were happy to walk through this open-air museum and grateful to Pavel for the inspiring journey into the city’s hidden layers.

🏘 Город, который прячется за фасадами
Сегодня мы вместе с нижегородскими иностранными переселенцами побывали в одном из самых атмосферных уголков города — Заповедных кварталах. Это исторический район, где сохранились деревянные дома конца XIX – начала XX века.
Нашим гидом стал Павел Гнилорыбов — историк, экскурсовод и автор медиапроекта «Архитектурные излишества».
Когда-то этот квартал был скромным жилым районом на окраине Нижнего. Здесь успели пожить и знаменитые писатели — Короленко и Горький. Время превратило квартал в островок старого города, он десятилетиями балансировал на грани исчезновения.
Но 2010-х произошло расселение, дома признали памятниками. Прошли первые фестивали, которые оживили квартал, привлекли внимание волонтеров и реставраторов.
🌸Словом, квартал возрождается: благоустраиваются его улочки, дворики и сады, открываются для посещения исторические дома, проходят культурные события. А его сердце — история и люди, которые сохраняют наследие и наполняют его смыслом.
Мы были рады пройтись по улочкам музея под открытым небом и благодарны Павлу за культурное историческое погружение!
