Yazidis are a Kurdish-speaking endogamous religious group indigenous to the Kurdistan region across Iraq, Syria, Turkey, and Iran, with smaller communities in Armenia and Georgia.
In August 2014, ISIS carried out a deliberate genocide in Sinjar to wipe them out. About 400,000 Yazidis fled to the Kurdistan Region; tens of thousands were trapped on Mount Sinjar facing starvation; those unable to escape were killed or enslaved.
UN-documented estimates show roughly 2,100–4,400 Yazidis were killed and thousands abducted. Over 6,000 women and children were taken, and nearly 2,800 remain missing. Sexual violence was systematically used to destroy the community from within.
