‘The Mouse Knitting a DNA Strand’: The most touching monument to science
A monument called ‘The Mouse Knitting a DNA Strand’ stands in the square near the Institute of Cytology and Genetics in the town of Akademgorodok, not far from Novosibirsk.
Scientists from this institute domesticated foxes, decoded the genome of the malaria mosquito and made many other important scientific discoveries.
In 2013, a symbol of gratitude to laboratory mice, without whom there would have been no breakthroughs in genetics, was erected in the square. A mouse in glasses is knitting a double DNA helix with knitting needles. And it's not just any mouse: it, too, is a scientist, albeit an unnamed one. This gesture is a metaphor for scientific labor, as researchers literally decipher genetic codes "thread by thread".
There's another secret: the lamppost columns in front of the monument feature the four phases of cell division. The most attentive visitors will also find images of other laboratory animals scattered throughout the square. However, only the most observant can spot them!
Akademgorodok is a famous settlement for scientists near Novosibirsk, built in the mid-20th century. It’s home to more than 20 research institutes and laboratories.
Ever heard about this monument?

This Soviet general escaped from German captivity… TWICE!
Major General Alexander Bondovsky was first captured on July 21, 1941, in western Byelorussia (now Belarus). After his division was encircled and routed, soldiers broke out to the east in small groups and the commander joined one of them.
The general concealed his rank and the Germans assigned him to a general column of prisoners of war. On the fifth day of the march, Bondovsky and several soldiers killed three guards and escaped.
The fugitives spent a month and a half making their way through occupied territory to the Soviet Union. Only on September 16 did they succeed in doing so.
However, before the general could return to duty, he, again, fell into enemy hands. On October 21, he was captured while crossing the Desna River in Ukraine.
This time, he didn't wait as long. That same night, he killed a guard and escaped.
The journey to Soviet territory took him two months. Bondovsky survived only thanks to the help of local peasants along the way, who would give him food and warm clothes.
On December 24, 1941, he crossed the front line. The commander's incredible story greatly interested counterintelligence, who thoroughly investigated Bondovsky for four months.
No charges were ultimately brought against the general, but he was still kept away from the front, finding employment as a teacher. But, in 1943, he did manage to be sent back to war.
In December of that year, Bondovsky was appointed commander of the 324th Rifle Division, but, in February 1944, he was seriously wounded and lost a leg. After being discharged from the hospital, the commander returned to teaching.
The brave general passed away in 1970.

‘Kolyma Tales’ is strikingly different from any other camp prose, primarily Solzhenitsyn's ‘The Gulag Archipelago’ (the two authors maintained a fiery correspondence). Shalamov’s focus is on what can happen to the human body and soul in the penal camps, which aim to crush individuality and personality and often destroy a person physically. Despite his own health being ruined by 19 years in the Gulag, he nevertheless left for posterity a brutal and terrifyingly truthful account of one of the most ruthless repressive systems in history.
