Ghana Post Marks King’s 25th Reign with NFT-Linked Stamps

Yesterday, Ghana Post began embracing tradition and tech with NFT-linked postage stamps, marking King Otumfuo Osei Tutu II’s Silver Jubilee.

Each of the 7,200 Crypto Stamps available, valued at 250 Ghanaian cedi ($18), integrates cultural motifs with blockchain technology, offering a tribute to the King’s 25-year reign.

Other Ghana Post collections, without NFT counterparts, are available at lower prices. However, the postal service does offer a conventional gold frame stamp priced at an eye-boggling 100,000 cedi ($7,200).

Popular meme coin Shiba Inu ($SHIB) has expanded its use as a payment method, now being accepted by major brands including Airbnb and Nike, as well as various NFT marketplaces following its integration with Polygon and Binance Smart Chain (BSC) in partnership with CoinGate.

CoinGate is a cryptocurrency payment gateway that connects digital currencies with traditional businesses, enabling retailers to accept cryptocurrency payments and this recent integration allows $SHIB holders to use their assets for a variety of real-world purchases.

The payment gateway announced this integration on X, encouraging the Shibarmy to try out these purchases using their $SHIB holdings.

NFT Community Splits Over Claire Silver’s Royalty Reform Call

In a recent X post regarding the NFT art realm, acclaimed artist Claire Silver expressed concerns about a drop in artist engagement and market dynamics attributed to diminished royalty payments. 

Royalties provide creators with income from secondary sales. Silver argues that reducing or eliminating this revenue stream reduces artists’ earnings and deters their involvement, leading to a less dynamic NFT industry. 

The collaborative AI artist elaborated on how royalty cuts have led artists to devalue the notion of scarcity in their works, resulting in no incentive for older collections, only new ones. Silver adds that she is “ashamed the space was so shortsighted.”

Damien Hirst Faces Allegations of Backdating Thousands of Paintings

British artist Damien Hirst faces allegations of backdating thousands of paintings in his NFT art project, ‘The Currency’. A recent investigation suggests that at least 1,000 of the 10,000 dot paintings were produced years later than the claimed date of 2016.

Launched in 2021, ‘The Currency’ featured 10,000 dot paintings where buyers had to choose between a physical painting or a corresponding NFT, with the unselected option being destroyed. Each painting was inscribed with the date 2016 and Hirst’s signature.

The project sold out quickly, generating nearly $90M and over 5,000 buyers chose physical paintings, while almost 4,000 selected NFTs, resulting in the destruction of its physical counterparts. In October 2022, Hirst and his team publicly burned almost half of the physical collection during an Instagram livestream.

The NFTs will be available exclusively on the Binance NFT Marketplace with fixed pricing across most of the collection, with one rare NFT expected to be highly sought after.

This announcement comes amidst recent legal challenges for Ronaldo related to his endorsement of Binance and its CR7 NFTs.
