Ethiopia’s digital financial revolution risks deepening exclusion, unless interest-free financial services are brought into the picture.

Despite strong deposit growth, only a handful of interest-free banks offer real digital financing services. Platforms like Halalpay and Ansar are innovating, but they’re the exception.

BNPL has emerged as the most viable digital financing model, but scaling it nationally requires more than product design; it demands clear regulation, investment in infrastructure, and a Sharia-compliant innovation ecosystem.

This article, part of Shega’s AKOFADA initiative (Advancing Knowledge on Financial Accessibility and DFS Adoption), explores how Ethiopia can build a more inclusive digital finance system by expanding interest-free financial services.

Managing money across providers in Ethiopia often means juggling multiple apps just to check balances or make transfers. Despite a shared National Switch that links systems, users still face fragmented, standalone apps for each provider. This complexity leads to inefficiencies, a disjointed experience, and greater friction for everyday transactions.

To better understand this challenge, Shega conducted a survey on the number of mobile banking apps users have in Ethiopia. The results showed that over 63% of respondents have more than three apps installed, and 38% have more than four.

For deeper insights into why a unified payment app could improve financial inclusion and adoption, explore the report “The Case for a Unified Payment App in Ethiopia” under AKOFADA, our initiative for bolstering the accessibility of information on DFS in Ethiopia.
