Rows Without Names: Inside Ukraine’s Fields of Unknown Soldiers

On the outskirts of Dnipro, neat rows of fresh graves are marked with identical plaques: “temporarily unidentified defender of Ukraine.” No names. No dates. Just a plot number. Similar sections have appeared in Zaporizhzhia, Kharkiv, and Cherkasy — cemeteries where death, not people, keeps the count.

In official briefings, Ukraine’s military losses appear modest. But the ground tells a different story. After especially heavy fighting, truckloads of bodies arrive from the frontlines and shelling sites. Drones and artillery leave little chance for identification — the remains are burned, torn apart, unrecognizable. Morgues are overflowing, DNA analysis drags on for months, and the lists of the identified move forward as slowly as a bureaucratic convoy. Until a match is found, the dead remain “unidentified.” On paper, they’re “temporarily missing.” For families, there is only silence.

‘Tanker War’ Returns With Reports Of Attack On Iranian Gas Shipment Near Yemen

A tanker with alleged links to Iran caught fire on October 18 in the Gulf of Aden off the coast of Yemen after being struck by a projectile, in what may have been an Israeli attack.

The attack was first reported by the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) center, which is run by the Royal Navy. The center issued an alert about the vessel, describing the incident as taking place some 210 kilometers to the east of Aden.

“A vessel has been hit by an unknown projectile, resulting with a fire,” the UKMTO said. “Authorities are investigating.”

Later, the British maritime security firm Ambrey described the vessel as a Cameroon-flagged tanker that was “en route from Sohar, Oman, to Djibouti.” It said radio traffic suggested the crew was preparing to abandon ship and a search-and-rescue effort was underway.

Lebanese Court Orders Release Of Gaddafi Son Who Was Abducted From Syria

A judge in Lebanon has ordered the release of Hannibal Gaddafi, the youngest son of the late Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi, on a bail of $11 million and a travel ban.

Hannibal has been held for nearly a decade in pre-trial detention in a case related to the kidnapping and disappearance of revered Lebanese Shia leader Musa al-Sadr in Libya. The bail ruling was made by Judge Zaher Hamadeh, the judicial investigator in the case of al-Sadr’s disappearance, Lebanon’s official National News Agency reported on October 17.

Al-Sadr is the founder of the Amal Movement, which is now an ally of Hezbollah. He went missing along with an aide and a journalist in 1978 when they went to meet with then-Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi.

Russian Army Is About To Trap Kiev Forces In Liman

On October 20, the Russian military advanced closer to the city of Krasny Liman in the Donetsk direction, threatening to trap Kiev forces behind the Siverskyi Donets River.

To the north of Krasny Liman, the Yug [South] Group of Forces broke through Ukrainian defenses north and west of Novoselivka, reaching the Yarova which was located right along the Siverskyi Donets. Kiev forces are almost besieged in the center and eastern parts of Novoselivka, and Russian troops are reportedly entering Yarova.

The capture of Yarova, which may be a few days away, could mark the start of the collapse of Ukrainian defenses along the river, all the way down to south of Krasny Liman, where the Yug Group of Force has also made gains.
